Anyone else blow up an engine?
I'm sorry to dissapoint, but I really didn't push it, it's an auto so its pretty difficult to red line it (again not that I've tried), so I can't pinpoint exactly what caused it. I heard a little "knocking" one day. Parked it for a week until I could look into it. When I started it back up it sounded like a souped up lawnmower.
I guess at this point I'm assuming the engine is blown. I took of the serpentine belt to isolate the noise and it was still there. That means it's definatly in the internal parts of the engine.
Nope no supercharger, I was going to install the avenger supercharger until I found out I needed to cut into the hood for a louver. That would have thrown a wrench in the AEV hood plan.
I might have the engine drilled out and upgraded to racing specs depending on what Jeep does with it. That would be a lot cheaper than the $25,000 6.1 Hemi option. Then the engine will be pretty much bullet proof and ready for the supercharger that will put the HP at just over 330 anyway (same as the 6.1 Hemi) for almost half the money.
I guess this sort of thing happens sometime

donty mean to burst your bubble..but your not gonna get 330 out of the 3.8 NA..maybe if you port the heads, cams, blower, and some free flowing exhaust...maybe and just maybe..your boost will have to be atleast14lbs...so in the long run it wont be that much cheaper...plus you m,ight have to consider the rearend in order to handle all of the power..but i could be wrong about all of this so dont take it to heart

Wow, some of you guys are real men. If my 07 with less than 8k miles on it started making any odd engine noises the last thing I'd do was "look into it" myself. One i'd have no clue what to look for and 2 I'd be scared S-less that anything I did, like removing a serpentine belt, etc would give the dealer cause to say it was my fault and not replace it.
You are correct on the 6.1 having 425hp and 420lb-ft.
It is claimed that the 6.4 has 505hp.
I am sorry to hear about your JK, I know how it feels... I threw a rod in my 4.0I6 '97 TJ at 28,000.

Sounds "like a souped up lawn mower" is not the same as a "threw a rod". A broken rod is a failed internal engine part that often exits the side of the engine leaving a hole . It should only happen at this mileage if you have a factory defect or abuse. The defect should be covered under under warranty.
Please update this thread when the engine is diagnosed so we can hear if the engine has a major failure. Do you have a line on a mod friendly dealer that is unlikely to reject you because of a "big tires, it must be abuse" type mentality?
Sorry to hear about your trouble. Do you have an auto? Any chance the flex plate came loose or cracked? They often sound like rod failures.
