Broken Windshield -What's your story?-
So my Jeep is not even a year old yet and I caught a rock square in the center top of my windshield today on the hwy.

It was so loud I thought it came out a slingshot! It spider webbed pretty good and you can actually feel the crack with your fingernail.
Wondering if anyone has had this issue and what caused it. Does anyone know if Jeep's are a little more prone to this because it's essentially a flat almost 90* piece of glass. I'll post some pics later.

My wife called me on day 2 of ownership to tell me she had been on the highway and we got a huge crack and it spidered to about the size of a nickel.
Called the insurance and they covered this for free (fill in of the crack). You can still see it (barely) but we don't have to replace the windshield. Since it is not in the line of sight we are legal.
If the size is smaller than a quarter I would consider having it filled by a professional. They vacuum the air out. Then they put some resin in to fill in the crack and then they use an ultraviolet light to have it bond to the glass. Most insurance companies cover this for free even if you have a deductible on your policy. If they don't cover it, it is less than $60 normally.
I do think the Jeep is more prone to this given all the angles. The air flow hits right on the shield. Just look at all the bugs we normally get. And CA doesn't have many bugs and my shield is always full of bugs.
A bug deflector may help change the airflow and thus allow for less things hitting the windshield. But I don't like the look and will deal with a dirty shield and fill in cracks as they come along.

Yeah, drive slower and stay far behind any trucks, or pass carefully. Even then, it's just a matter of time before you get one.
I got hit by something that fell off of an oncoming 18 wheeler one night, and it put a dime sized hole in my windshield and spiderwebbed almost the whole driver side. I had glass all over the inside of my Jeep. Flat windshields (I know it has a little curvature but it ain't much) and rocks don't mix.

May 11th, on a trip from NY to Wilmington, NC, a truck kicked up a rock in the Washington - VA area and chipped and cracked the windshield. I was doing about 70mph at the time and it sounded like a gun shot. My wife jumped at the sound. Safelite patched it up (not a bad job and covered by insurance) in Wilmington, but I had the windshield replaced anyway when I got home.

I had my JK for 2 days and had the windshield replaced. Didn't even make a trip on the highway. Suprisingly my dealer covered it under warrenty. I noticed a few other brand new JK's at the auto glass shop, im convinced theres a pressure point of some sort on the windshield from being installed at the factory.
Check your insurance to see what is actually covered. Most companies cover chip repair for free!
I have a glass waiver on all my cars. That means windshields are only $100 each time and chip repair is always free. With the $100 deductable, every windshield shop I deal with will waive my $100, so all windshields are free too! I've replaced 3 so far (different rigs) and one chip in my JK.
