Notice for the first time yesterday. Stuck in stop and go traffic for an hour and a half. I checked out the bushing on the shaft, [that doesn't sound right] ,but it had not moved. May take it to the dealer, for all the good it will probably do.
Never a clunck or knock in 19K+.

Had my clunk "fixed" by the dealer (they replaced the "steering shaft ball-support" apparantly) and it came back about 3K miles later. Will wait until warranty is just about up, get them to replace the intermediate shaft and then do the 5th wheel grease mod that many here have tried and found successful.
What an incredibly annoying problem is. 2 out of the 3 JKs I've owned have had it, especially in warm weather. The third had stock death wobble. The worst part is both problems were ones the dealer couldn't "reproduce"

This is a pretty easy fix.
Just make a small cut in the rubber boot on the steering shaft, & spray grease on the splines on the steering shaft. (black rubber accordian style boot on steering shaft, drivers side of motor.) The splines don't seem to be lubed properly at the factory & when you turn the steering wheel, they kinda stick & make a clunking, knocking sound.
I used a can of white lithium grease with teflon, inserted the hose into the small slit I made in the boot, filled the boot with grease & viola. No more clunk/knock.
My '10 Rubi Unlimited did this when new & at around 500 miles & did the lube trick & all is still well, now approaching 18k.
BTW the clunk I am referring to is the one commonly found on new JK's when you turn the steering wheel, not to be confused with the worn out ball joint clunk which is more common on higher mileage JK's
Hope this helps.
