Ask ten different people and get ten different answers. Ask Chrysler and it'll be the Mopar brand of course. As someone already said you don't have to remove your covers to change your gear lube, but if you do I'd use a Lube Locker. I did RTV when I put my Solid differential covers on and I hit a rock and it was enough to break the seal.

Question Question

Hello guys, I should have done more homework, but A friend of mine helped me install my diff cover, and by helped, I mean he did everything but the busywork, thanks Larry.

Well I have the front diff cover and it is a dana 30, but the solid fill cap is much higher, and I decided to fill it all the way up. I hear most people put one quart in there, but I put in 2 and a half...

Now it is coming out the breather tubes making a mess, but I found out that would happen. My problem is that every now and then, I smell a burnt oil like smell, which worries me. any input at all will help.

I'd check everything out, but it's probably just the fluid cooking on something hot.

Overfilling any oil sump is not a good thing.
The diff should only be filled to the fill plug, that way there's enough room inside for the fluid to circulate and shed heat correctly. Of course if you install a larger capacity cover it may take a bit more fluid, however make sure you're not overfilling.

This thread made me think of something that my dealer told me and I'm not sure if it's correct or not.

I have the X-package, but was one of the lucky few who managed to find one late on '07 with the electronic sway bar disconnect and locking rear d44 axel.

When I took it in for some service, I inquired about how much it would cost to change the diff. fluid and was told about $100 an axel

So, I asked about changing the fluid myself and he told me to make sure I add that LSD additive or I will damage my gears. The question I have though, is since I have the locking rear, I don’t have the LSD and therefore I don’t need the additive, correct?
