There seems to be 2 types of problems that others are having. Some seem to have their engine simply dying (!) I had (have?) the "Limp Mode" problem, and I also have a Scangauge, which gives us another piece to the puzzle. I spent a few hours here Saturday reading this forum (and others) - GREAT thread BTW, and thought I'd add a post.

Specifically, when I was idling, or took my foot off the gas while moving slowly, it would suddenly go into "Limp Mode": the red ETC light came on )Z( , and the yellow traction control warning light came on beside it, the engine would idle roughly, at about 1100 RPM (in gear), (vs about 700 normally), and my Scangauge would read a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) reading of 14 (rather than the normal 12). After another minute or 2 the check engine light would come on (with a beep), and the Scangauge would (after checking) tell me it was code P0507 (similar to one of the posts above), which is "IDLE SPEED PERFORMANCE HIGHER THAN EXPECTED". Turning off the engine and restarting it would fix the problem (for now) - both warning lights go out, the engine runs fine, and the Scangauge could clear the DTC code. However, it's still in what I'll call it's "Broken Phase".

In this Broken Phase, it would always do it again within about 5 - 10 miles max (16 KM). I could never drive more than that (in one session - with the engine on), without it going into Limp Mode. I also noticed that even when I restarted the motor and it seemed to be operating normally, the Scangauge TPS reading at idle would be 10, vs. the normal 12. Thus, I could tell that it was still in the Broken Phase, and going to go into Limp Mode again soon, just by the TPS reading. BTW, a TPS reading of 10 is what the Scangauge normally shows when I shut off the engine.

Well I 'fixed' it on Sunday, although I'm not entirely sure how. First I wiggled the connectors on my Off Road Engineering high-idle box (which has worked fine for a few months BTW) (thinking maybe a loose connection), but it didn't fix it. Then I changed my Autometer tranny gauge (the sensor got wet from deep snow, which blew the gauge!), and then ran the engine for 15 minutes, in drive, e-brake on and foot on the brake, to warm the tranny, to check the gauge (all works). Part way through that, it went into Limp Mode, but I just ran the engine a little more (to finish warming the tranny). I stopped and went in the house (to change my clothes), then drove to church (about 10 km), and then home, with no problems. I noticed that the Scangauge read a TPS reading of 12 now at idle, like it was supposed to, so now it's fixed, and has been working fine for about 200 miles. Hmmm. I'm kind of expecting it to do it again soon, but for now if it works don't fix it.

I had my first "Limp Mode" experience today. 13K miles, 10 months. Sitting in stop and go traffic and all of a sudden, exactly as you described, the red ETC light came on, and the yellow traction control warning light came on beside it, the engine would idle roughly, minimal response at acceleration, max speed of 45mph, and overall horrible driving experience. I pulled over, turned it off, starting it back up and same thing. I was able to putter my way home, 45mph on Rt 66, and fully expect more of the same tomorrow morning. Going to take it in tomorrow, hopefully I can make it there....

JK's spending the night at the dealer. They will be replacing the throttle body and some other mechanism that's been causing warning lights to come and go at random. Based on what I've seen around the forum, I guess I can't complain that I made it this long before my first major issue. Though I seem to recall having gone 2 years and 60K before my first issue with my Acura...

My JK has been on service for three days now and will hopefully be getting a new throttle body installed tomorrow.

Last winter I was stranded 150 miles from home. My ETC light came on and the trans locked in third gear. I was able to get home in limp home mode in a mere 7.5 hours at a blazing 23 mph. At that time, they replaced the wiring harness and a few sensors that were fried out.

This past weekend my tranny strated to feel like it was slipping and then on Monday on my way to work (110 mile commute round trip) it locked into third gear again.

This is being covered under my powertrain warranty and hopefully will be the last time I have to deal with it.

On a side note, this is my first time servicing it at a dealer since they closed mine. 25 minute drive to get there. I dropped it off at 8am for my appointment and they did not touch it until today, thursday. I have no relationship with this dealer but did with my closed dealer. I had bought and serviced all of my cars there for the past 10 years. I am very disappointed with the situation that Chrysler has put a long term customer in and will no longer purchase Chryselr Group vehicles. They have surely lost a customer. I am debating if I want to keep my Jeep all together. I am very unhappy.

mine ended up being the egc or something like that... it had a leak and that was throwing the code sometimes.

Default Extended sleepover...

Figured I'd share another update for anyone interested. I'll try to keep it brief so as not to bore anyone...
Spoke to the dealership today... they replaced the throttle body this morning, ran diagnostics and proceded to find more issues. A new computer was being overnighted tonigt, so MAYBE tomorrow it will be fixed. Too bad I opted to have it towed to the dealership near my office as opposed to the one closer to my home...
1) this is now 3 parts they have had to have overnighted to their shop for my JK - apparently they don't stock any critical parts in their on-hand inventory, and apparently they have a 1-part per day threshold they can't seem to get past.
2) they will not provide a loaner, even if the vehicle is still less than a year old and well under warranty (again, I hate to keep going back to the Acura thing but it's my only comparison point at this time... the Acura dealer one mile down the road offered a free loaner anytime service was going to exceed 2 hours. This is now in excess of 2 days and they can't offer any way for me to get home.)
3) everyone I've spoken with has had a sh*tty attitude and makes me feel like an ass for inconveniencing them with my Jeep's problems.
I'm frustrated as hell, and incredibly disapointed. Up until now I've been really happy with the JK, but there is no excuse for this kind of crap less than a year and 13k miles in. I'm just thankful I wasn't on a trail somewhere - if I couldn't get above 25 mph on flat highway surface I can't imagine the difficulty I'd have if this happened in the middle of a trail.

I just had the ETC light come up on me as my rig died going up a steep hill playing in the Cleveland forest today. I forded through a couple puddles and then up a small hill. Half way up the thing just dies.....I rolled her back down the hill and go to start her up and it idled very poorly. It wouldn't crank over easily as well. It took a good couple second turn of the ignition to turn it back over.

I got out to check thinking I ingested some water but the engine compartment was dry. I turned it off and then back on -- same problem -- rough idle, sounded like it was going to stall. I drove it for about 5 minutes and it drove like I was getting on and off of the peddle quickly -- something wasn't right so I stopped again to check things out visually but nothing noticeably wrong. I got back in, cranked it over and good to go?

Scary sh1t when you're going up a hill......guess this is considered 'normal' in the Chrysler world????? I'll just monitor it and if it happens again, off to the dealership.

4. Replace wiring harness for throttle body

5 days after the 4th dealer fix the light came on. At this point, I'm sick of this crap and just ignore the issue. I ended up getting a free 100k mile 7 year maximum care warranty out of it when I escalated the issue to Chrysler corporate and figure if the thing craps out, the warranty will cover it.

Unless something new has come out, there is NO FIX for this and the light WILL come back on.

Chysler sucks.

My 2008 had this warning and went into limp mode. Changed the Throttle Control Unit with a unit from Cardone. Purchased at NAPA. Problem solved for me. Jeep idled better and did not stumble when accelerating from a stop.

Good luck!
