Default Engine Oil Dipstick Accuracy

Just wondering if JK's are known for having inaccurate dipsticks. When I bought my JK the oil level was slightly over the safe mark by about a 1/8 of an inch. When I just changed my oil, it sits at the same level as it did before changing it. I put 6 quarts in upon refill.

I know when I owned my KJ there was some reports of inaccurate dipstick readings.
TIA

I've never heard of a problem like that. Are you sure that your Jeep was on level ground both times that you checked the oil? Are you certain that the oil had sufficient time after running to drain back into the pan? Some folks have had problems with certain brands of filters allowing the oil to improperly drain from the filter. I suppose that could change your oil level.

After posting this, I ran my Jeep around for a little while and then let it sit for 15 minutes in our parking lot, which is level. My oil level sits right on the kink of the dipstick, which about a 1/4" over the full mark. It's definitely more than 1/8" over as previously stated.

When I changed my oil at my stepfather's house the Jeep was parked on a slight incline. (The Jeep was facing uphill). I know I got all the old oil out since the drain plug sits right on the back side of the pan. That would also explain why when I checked the oil level over at his house, it was only an 1/8" over the full mark. It wasn't sitting perfectly level.

I just found this post: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...ler+overfilled

It appears to be a common thing. I don't think it'll hurt anything. Next oil change I'll just put 5.5 quarts in and check it.

I would just put 6 qts. back into it since you're allowing plenty of time for the oil to drain. Mine comes to the top of the hump after refilling and it has since it was new.
I check my oil religiously and I can tell you that I have no oil usage at all with mine. The level on the dipstick pretty much remains in the same area between oil changes. When I drain it I fill up the 5 qt jug and the 1 qt bottle with the used oil. I believe that if I filled it just until it came to the full line, I would be running it a little low. It wouldn't be enough to hurt it, but it would still be a little low. In off camber situations it sure wouldn't hurt to have your oil level to it's proper capacity though.
over 3 1/2 years later I don't see why I should change my idea on this, it hasn't hurt my engine yet.

Mine is also at the hump at every oil change - Done at the dealership. Have not done my own yet, but after my maintenance freebies run out I will.

They are accurate. But, sometimes when it's changed all of the oil doesn't drain from the engine and if you put in the full 6qts. you will be over by 1/8". The best thing to do is to change the oil, refill with 5 1/2 qts. and then adjust the next day after you run it for a few miles. Then, you can top it off to the full line if you have to. This only seems to be the case with JK's. My TJ didn't do it and my YJ doesn't. Sometimes I have to add a half qt. and sometimes I don't after doing it the same way. I only add 5.5 like I said & then adjust from there. This is the only way it seems to work without over filling. Although, 1/8" on the stick is no big deal.

Same here, 6 quart fill @ oil change the level is at the kink above full, aprox 1/8". This is after the engine is run and then allowed to sit for a while. The level drops to full mark by the next oil change.

This only adds to the idea that not all of these dipsticks are accurate. 5 qts and you're spot on. Others on another thread have done 6 and they're spot on. Yet others have done 5.5 and they are spot on.
I would rather have my capacity at the right amount. The amount left in the engine after a good 10-15 minute drain (like I do because I piddle around while it's draining) is pretty much negligible. 6 qts. + what very little is in the engine will not be enough to hurt anything.

People need to post when the check the oil during oil changes. When I first check it, 5.5 is at full. After I crank the engine (and fill the upper end and oil filter), I find that 6 puts it at full.

Mine is at the crest of the hump above the full line after cranking. This is with 6 qts. and a good long drain as I mentioned before.
