Default GasCap error light still on even after replacing Evap Canister

I replaced the damaged Evap Canister but I still get a GasCap message. Any suggestions?

That seems to be a very common error even with everything in good working order.

I went through this for 8 months with my dealer. According to my dealer, the first two times they replaced the evap they only replaced the canister and not the connectors. On my third full canister, they ordered the connectors instead of reusing parts. It worked, and I'm about 9 months going strong without the gascap light.

If you didn't get the o-ring between the canister and purge valve (the smaller white thing) seated correctly, you'll get the light. If you've somehow flipped that purge valve or the whole assembly upside down, that'll also make the computer unhappy.

okay, I'm getting the same gascap error after replacing the evap canister. does anyone have a pic of how the connections go on? the larger connection seems to fit loosely, is there supposed to be a rubber gasket on there to seal the connection?

this may be a stupid question, but have you actually tried a new gascap?

The fix seer1 mentioned is what I had to do -- installed a $1.78 O ring between the black cannister and white purge valve. Others have used RTV, but the important thing to remember is a leak anywhere in the closed fuel system is likely to give you a gas cap error.

I was concerned about water entering the system between the white purge valve and the evap cannister. Is is a tight fit or was there supposed to be an O ring there. I was assuming I lost something when the evap cannister ripped off. What size O ring do I need?

don't forget the system has more than just the canister, connection and gas cap.

the canister holds gas vapours and then burns them the next time the engine is run.

so there are lines that run up to the evap purge solenoid(under the hood)

I had a vent line that melted from being to close to the EGR tube causing a same affect leak.

I just patched it up with some rubber hose and clamps and the light wenrt out
