mine started taht a few months ago. I had replaced my evaporation canister in early 2009 because the check valve got busted on the trails. After replacing it my check engine light came on and nothing i did would make it go out and stay out. I finally read about a seal that i needed that did not come with the replacment canister. After repairing my canister i have had no more problems with an overflow. This could be coincidense, but i do wonder, sense the evaporation canister consumes the fimes from the gas tank, could it cause an air lock of some kind? any ideas?

For you guy's that it clicks off first and then overflows when toping off, you are not having the same problem. The problem a lot of us are having is it doesn't click off until the gas is all over the place. If I let mine go until it stops it will spill anywhere from a 1/2 cup to a quart or so.

Actually Hammerhead it has happened to me in both situations not just were it doesn't click off. I am going to the dealer today and see what my cousin tells me about this issue and if I ask him to replace the tank cuz this is what is causing it he will do it. I like the feedback that I get from this forum and it helps out a lot. When I get the info from here they are very happy cuz it solves some problems that they face with some vehicles and they have no solution for. Plus if they have to figure out the problem they make no money on just that time to figure the problem out, only the repairs. So if the tank check valve is what was the repair on your tank then I will get a new tank. I will mention the evap cannister to him and see what he say.

well I guess I'm glad to see that this is a common problem and not just me. mine has done a little bit of overflow every time for the past couple months and i couldn't figure it out and today it out did itself and went all over the jeep and the ground. no more auto filling i guess.

I talked to my dealer about it (maybe about 3 months ago?) and they said "Didn't seem to be a problem".

Things I've noticed, however; Say the tank is 3/4 full, and you just want to fill up 1/4 - It wont overflow (for me). BUT if the tank is less than 1/4 full and I go to fill up, it'll overflow. Does this seem to be what everyone else is realizing too?

Thats what mine does, but it doesn't "overflow". It spits the gas out.

I have learned to stand very far away, and upwind....

I came back from the dealership and they have ordered a tank for my jk, they have told me that this problem had started with the Durango and the Aspen, which aparently share the same similar gas tank and they had no idea this problem was occuring with the jk until I brought it up to the delaerships attention. They said that due to the fact this problem is generaly occuring around the 40k mile area that most people are already out of warranty and don't want to spend the money to have it fixed. I also asked about there being any TSB for this problem and they said that there are none. I saked them how do you get a TSB posted with this problem and with all the shoulder shrugging I got seems like the Manufacturer used it's bean counters very well, and by the time anyone suspects of this problem the owner is on the hook for the repair or deal with it and the few people that do have an extended warranty well they feel it was worth the problem. Good luck to you guys. The problem stems from the faulty valve inside the tank and well tank has to be replaced. If I were some of you that are close to the limit on your warranty I would go to the dealership and start complaining about it that way when it does happen the problem was occuring while you were under warranty. They have to honor it because they claimed at that time that the problem was not showing itself or it was fixed which puts them both ways on the hook for a repair. GOOD LUCK

I have an 07 and have not had any problems with my gas tank. I hope I don't but it sounds like I may.
