Default Grinding on cold start

Well winter is finally showing up here, and I've noticed when starting the Jeep up when it's cold, after the engine starts I get a short grinding noise, like the starter is going for an extra second or so. Anybody else experience anything like this? Is it worth having checked out, or should I just chalk it up to strange winter noises?

Mine does it too. Just a split second after start up. It doesn't sound like lifter noise as others have reported (oil filter leak down valve problem). Sounds more like the clutch on the AC compressor or the starter failing to completely disengage.

I have the same issue, but only noticed it a few days ago. Sorry I have nothing better to offer except the same issue.

Mine did it too, until I realized it was not the Jeep, but me. The ignition key switch is computerized. All you need to do is turn it to the start position and let it go quickly. The Jeep will start itself. You don't have to hold the key to turn the starter.

"The ignition key switch is computerized."

That's the "tilt-start" thingy? Don't think JK's with standard transmission have it. Guess I can check on mine later...

That ain't it. I've known about this feature since I bought my Jeep and I just barely touch the key to get her started. Any other ideas.

Yeah. You either got a bad spot on the flywheel or your starter is going out.

Why would it only do it when it's cold?

My starter on my 2001 Jetta that I had did the same thing. I removed the starter and put some grease on the gear and never had another problem.

Mine has done it a few times but only when its really cold. Below 15 deg F. I sounds like a grinding sound like the starter held in there and extra second too long.
