I'm impressed too! That's great!!!

Even if that is with windchill.

Left mine sitting outside Friday (-27C) and Saturday (-29C) night and all day Sunday (-29C). Temps don't include windchill. Started pretty much immediately which is good because if an fuel injected vehicle doesn't start right away and floods in those temps you're screwed.

It made the noise. I've never had a vehicle make a noise quite like it, but it sounds to me like the starter is slow to disengage. /shrug

What worries me more is when it kicked out of 4th gear twice on my way to work this morning...

Saturday morning when I started it up it was around -28 out, and it made the noise again, only it seemed like it was a second or two after the starter had disengaged and the engine was running.

Yesterday I had it plugged in for about an hour and a half and started it around the same temp and it started with far less hesitation and no strange sounds.

I tried the suggestion of making sure the heater controls were not in a mixed mode (where the AC would be on) before starting the Jeep. Lo and behold, haven't heard the noise since.

Has anybody considered power steering?

Yesterday morning it was around -15C when I went out to start the Jeep. When I started it I was leaning in from outside since I still had to brush all the snow off. Well I was leaning a little on the steering wheel when I started it. I got the grinding for a second (after the starter had disengaged) and as soon as the grinding stopped, the steering wheel came 'unlocked' and moved freely. I wouldn't have noticed this had I not been leaning on the steering wheel and almost fell over at the time it released.

Just something else to ponder

Heater was also off at the time.

yup, I'm in the "my starter doesn't disengage for 1/4 second after it starts" club too.

It only happens when it's below about -20C and it's been sitting all night. Plugging in the block heater doesn't help with the sound.
