I bought a Racor Heavy lift from Costco for right at $100. (also available on Amazon) http://racorinc.com/Products.aspx?id=150
Two 69" 2x4's
Two 69" 2x6's
8 eye bolts/nuts/washers
8 barrel bolts
$10 in chain

The hoist is awesome. Tons of room on top (or the shelf that goes up and down) for freedom tops and other items. It goes up and down with my cordless drill. I put the 2x4s on top with chains attached and the 2x6s under the top (I liked the bigger board to spread out weight) When you take the top off its easy to slip the boards under the top, back jeep into position, drop the chains down and drop the hoist, screw the barrel bolts closed, put freedom tops on shelf, use drill to raise hoist to ceiling, and drive jeep off.. It takes me about 10 minutes to get top off and top is stored out of way. The whole thing should be less than $150.

Here is the finished product. Super easy (I am not very handy)

Default None of the above

I made my own too for about $35. For me, there's no need to buy something that does the same job that costs a lot more. Four pulleys, four Eye-bolts, two tie-down rings, four carabiners. Pretty simple. Tight up against the ceiling so it's easy to walk under and not in the way.

I just use the ratchet type tie downs.

i only need to ratchet it up 1" then drive out.

When I want to lower it I just rachet it back down. It is only 1" so it does not take long.

I made my own based on the Hoist-a-Top design, but much stronger and cheaper. You can get uni-strut, hardware, cable, pullies etc. at home depot. I bought a nice brake winch from Northern tool for $60. Total investment < $150. Incredibly easy to use and I hoist my soft top up for winter storage. Made for a fun and satisfying project.
