Default Help removing airbag

I'm trying to remove the airbag to replace my clock spring and I have now wasted 2.5 hours just trying to get the airbag off. This seems impossible. I'm able to get the bottom one off no problem because it has a slot but the top has no slot like shown in many videos. And will not come off. I have no idea where to even place the 90 degree screw driver as I'm just guessing and scratching and breaking more stuff. I

At the 2:00 minute mark, he shows the screwdriver they he altered so I will try and use that for sure and at 1:51 you can see he points to the openings on the plastic part to insert a screwdriver tool into. I simply do not have those holes. I have the bottom one but they top at 10 oclock and 2 oclock i don't have. One of the last pictures is from above with the steering wheel straight to show I don't have the holes and the final picture is where I think the actual hole is but it's just a guess.

Bump to the top as of like to get and get this repair done. My plan is back to work Monday and I'll bend a harbor freight screw driver and see if I can get a longer 90 degree hook.

Any advice on this one since my steering column doesn't seem to have the normal cutouts? I'm assuming the tiny cutouts at around 10:00 and 2:00?

There should be three at 120* apart. So to reference a clock face it would be 10/2/6. Who butchered those holes for the airbag mounts? And are you doing the clock spring upgrade or does the Jeep have it already? I remember the video stating that it is more difficult to go back in after the upgrade due to the new shroud design.

I unfortunately destroyed it like an idiot. The Jeep had it done already under the recall about 3-4 years ago. My first one had no issues but I got the recall and the dealer did it free of charge. The one they put in failed within 4 years. Now no longer covered under the recall warranty and I'm on my own. This would definitely explain why my shroud looks so different than the videos.

That is strange. I feel like I'm often on the similar "nothing is easy as it should be" path. Something that should have been a simple repair turns into a headache. I wonder why they would have previously replaced that shroud during the recall, and why it wouldn't have had the access holes. Surely it was the same Mopar part.

EHarris, in case you weren't aware, Recalls do not expire, even if it was performed 1 time and it fails again the Mfg has to repair again per the Recall as long as the vehicle is registered and insured operating on public roadways. It might benefit to contact the dealership you have a good relationship with and inquire about coverage.

I went to the Chat Window on Chrysler website and the person there told me that they replace it under recall for free first and then after that it falls under the 2 year Mopar part warranty. They said the repair falls on me. Do you have anything I can look at in writing that I could bring that states otherwise? I will certainly start looking myself. I have a good relationship with my dealer, but they never get a dime from me if I can help it so I'm sure the computer on their end says to bill me and make it count lol

Well I also have a bad water pump gasket now, so I'll be bringing to the dealer on the lifetime powertrain warranty. While its there I will try and convince redoing the clock spring. It really sucks that nothing was wrong with my first clock spring, and it lasted no problems until 2016. As soon as the dealer touches it within 4 years its shot. Especially on something that has a 15-year warranty to begin with.

Just to update: Jeep is at the dealer for water pump repair. While there, I had to pay the $180 diagnostic fee for diagnosing the clock spring. If it turns out to be a bad clock spring, then they will petition Chrysler to replace it for free under warranty. I have no idea what that means, but I have a feeling they are thinking once I am in for $180 I might as well apply that to the repair fee and just get it done on the spot.

So again anyone with any literature that states the recall part has to last longer than the 2-year Mopar Warranty I would really appreciate it.

The dealer petitioned Chrysler, and I was denied full reimbursement. I will have to pay half, which is $357 out of my pocket. Not happy that a 15-year national recall only lasts 3.5 years however I guess I could always contact Chrysler myself and try to get my money back that way. Or I can just say ohh well at this point. Can't beat the house.
