I know what your sayin mate.
Not a nice feelin at all.
When it pops its not some sort of soft sound but like a sonic boooooom.

I don't think you can do anything on your own to fix this unless you have your own work shop and correct tools to change 1st and 2nd syncs as per the TSB or if you have a new tranny to put in.

Ours did what yours is doing straight from the show room.
1st gear bang and bang even if you held it in 1st gear.

Jeep put in a new tranny after I stated to make noise etc....

5000km later and no popping to date.

But its always in the back of my mind even with it now coming to 4 months......

This is a known issue with Chrysler. The tranny on my 09 was replaced and resolved the issue.

update 2:
dealer claims it is the inner shift boot (the harder one to access) and that it was protruding out and blocking my 1st.... does this sound accurate possible?
will get it back friday night

I've had my boot replaced and it didn't work. Updated guts for the tranny are on order as they weren't available until mid august.

Anyone wanting an update... here it is:
Brought to dealer and they claim to have replaced the inner shift boot. It only made the problem worse after a single day of issue free driving The jeep is literally not drivable now. I have to start out in second and with 3.21's this is virtually impossible.
Brought it back today and they seem to have been expecting me. I will find out their diagnosis in the morning but it looks like a new tranny is going in.

My buddy just had his tranny replaced at 60000kms because of this. It first started off with his gear shifter breaking off. He then had the first&second gear syncros replaced, problem still occurred then finally the trans replaced. Now he's probably gonna get rid of the hunk a crap as he's had nothin but problems with it since buying it new from the dealer.

that is not very encouraging... they are now replacing the syncos or whatever for the 1st gear... no new tranny- just rebuilding some parts in it... anyone actaully have this fix the problem?
