Default Oil change indicator

What prompts the oil chg message to appear? Is it the mileage, or the condition of the oil? If mileage, can it be changed to a longer setting (like 5000 miles instead of 3000?)

I heard it is miles weighted with MPH, RPM's, temperature, throttle position, etc. For example, driving at mostly 55 MPH on flat ground in spring might result in 5000 miles. But with a heavy throttle, mountains, 75 MPH, and summer heat it might be 3000 miles.

on my 09, with 51k on it, it seems to go between 4 and 5k miles, certainly not 3.

That seemingly random timing makes me wander if it is a sensor or if it is mileage or time.

Straight from Chysler Academy Encyclopedia:

"Oil Change Indicator"

Regular oil changes are one of the best ways to extend the life of an engine, yet some people overlook its importance. This system prompts customers when an oil change is necessary. A message appears for 10 to 12 seconds after each startup, accompanied by a single chime.

- "Oil Change Required" (if equipped with EVIC)
- "Oil Change" (odometer)

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calculates an oil change interval based on vehicle use. Indicators that can trigger the message and require more frequent oil changes include:

- Extended operation in hot (>90F) or cold (<32F) temperatures
- Stop-and-go driving, prolonged idling and extensive short trips (<10 miles)
- Trailer tow usage
- 250 hours of run time since last reset, usually caused by prolonged idling

The PCM examines the inputs once the vehicle has driven 2,500 miles since the last reset. If it finds one or more indicators, it turns the oil change reminder. If no indicators are found, it will wait to turn on at 5,500 miles. This is designed to prompt customers 500 miles prior to the 3,000 and 6,000 mile intervals.

What's your build date, the early '07s didn't have the OCI. (or so I've read on the forum)
