For real. I went round and round with a guy from AutoZone because he said that there was no PCV valve on my Jeep. Honestly, i was so shocked at what he was tellin me all I could think to say is "this would be a good place to open up a parts store."

And with that kids, is the right way to test it.....I know the old inline 6 that was in my YJ, that stupid thing would get clogged with gunk a lot! Thank goodness newer vehicles can sometimes go an entire lifespan and you will never have to change this part.

Generally once you get it out (in one piece) if you give it a shake and it rattles and sounds like the inside isn't gummed up, it's OK. If it doesn't rattle, then chances are that it's gummed up and stuck either open or closed.

But like the other responses - it's hard enough to get out in one piece, and cheap enough to just replace.

That's the that goes from the valve cover to the air cleaner box, correct?

Have a look at this thread by ronjenx; it explains what the PCV valve does and has cut-away pics of the internals:

And take a look at this thread (also by ronjenx). It details all the steps (with pictures) involved in accessing and removing the valve including a quick and easy way method to remove the PCV valve undamaged using a zip tie and a pair of pliers:
