Did you put some sealer on the head bolts? I did not know anything about that, had a friend mechanic do the work at the auto craft shop. He said the head bolts go thru water jackets and need the sealant. If not, then they leak and people think it is the head, when it is just the bolts. It leaks thru the threads on the bolt. Don't know if that is your issue, but the heads are pulled now, so a moot point.

Uses more than a liter between 6000 mile changes, starting to feel a little low on power. I need to do a compression check soon. Searching for other options (Hemi, new 3.8 long block, used 3.8, building this 3.8, adding a Ripp S/C, or the new Cummins)

The only issues I have had with this engine besides lack of power is a water pump at 6K miles and cracked exhaust manifolds at 80K. Driven HARD. I even towed with it for probably 20K miles, over mountains in the summer.
Replace factory PCV valve, move to 5w30.

Is there an aftermarket PCV that works better than the factory part?

A few years ago I visually compared the factory PCV to another brand -- The factory one has a small opening at the top that would allow trapped oil (from crankcase mist) to drain back into the valve cover after engine shutdown (no manifold vacuum). The other PCV didn't have this, so I stuck with the OEM part.

Default 100,000 mile update

My 08 is just under 100K miles so thought I would post an update. Internally the engine seems to be in great shape. I've been doing UOAs almost every oil change since new. I started using 5w-30 almost immediately after buying my Jeep when I noticed some engine noise while out in the desert one hot summer day. UOA wear metals are great.

It uses about 1 qt of oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles with 5w-30. My last oil change I tried M1 0w-40. It went 5,000 miles without needing any additional oil.

Problems, let's see. There seems to be a slight oil leak from the intake manifold. There is a little pink crust under the water pump so I'm guessing there is a slight leak there. And I hear a slight tick when starting the engine cold so I think there is a crack in the driver's side exhaust manifold.

I could get these fixed under my lifetime warranty but not going to bother. My jeep will be going to Robbie at MoTech within the next month for a GM LS 5.3L engine swap.

I love my Jeep and my only real complaint over 9 years of ownership has been it's lack of power.

07 Rubi has 205kms on it. Just a water pump at 200k. Oil use at 5000km interval changes with 5w20 synth from new is negligible.
Previous owner was family so I knew the complete history and was comfortable buying it with high milage....

Currently..

105k miles.

Burns about 1 qt of oil per 800 miles (after the first 1000 miles of an oil change)

Started burning oil about 65k miles. Did an oil consumption test at 85k -- burned 1k over the first 3k miles, then 1 qt per 800-1k miles after that until the oil change. Dealer indicated 1 qt usage over 3000 miles was 'normal'. Even though it then burned 1 qt per 1k miles for the next 2000 miles..... only the first 3k miles counted for the oil consumption test (didn't burn ANY oil prior to 65k.) (Not happy...)

Slight leak at the back of the pan.

Only other issue is the throwout bearing sounds like a can of marbles.. and has been squealing since about 15k miles, but the dealer said that is 'normal'. (BS)

Putting in a new reman engine in a week or so. Hopefully will resolve the oil consumption issues.

Hopefully you've tried a little thicker oil and a new PCV before deciding to jump to a reman motor.

The terrible TOB is (sadly) normal for our vehicle, but shouldn't be normal or acceptable.

PCV was replaced, no change to the oil consumption.

Changed the oil from 5W20 to 5W30 to 10W30, no appreciable change in oil consumption.

At this point it's not burning enough to be a big problem, but it's burning enough I just don't want to deal with it -- nor do I want an engine failure... so I'm lucky enough to have the time and money to go with a reman before it fails.

That's odd for the engine not to respond to the changes but fantastic that you've got the insight to fix it before it becomes a larger issue. I'm sure the community, myself included, would be interested in which reman you go with and how the installation goes.
