Poor Gas Mileagle
I have a 2dr Jk with 4.10 gears. After driving about 2000 miles I am only getting about 14 mpg. My question is, shouldnt it be a little higher than this, and if it should, is it something that I should take it to the dealership to check on?
Thanks,
Joe

That's the one thing I don't like... the Average Fuel Economy Display. I mean it's not Prius. Fuel economy isn't the selling point of JK. I don't know why it comes with Average Fuel Economy Display. It's very easy to get obsessed with checking on that thing... my other car 05 KJ (Liberty Renegade) came with that too and I got obsessed with checking with Agerage Fuel meter for a while.... It's very dangerous.
Now, I just leave that display with Compass + Temp. Hardly ever look at it.
I don't think 14mpg is that odd. More you drive local/city road "stop-and-go" the average goes down. If you want to see higher average fuel economy, you need to drive on freeway (60~65 miles) late night for an hour or so. It should go back up to around 17.

I thought you are talking about the display.
I thought it comes with all JK...
Don't you have a digital display right below the speed meter? It usually shows Compass and Tempreture. If you press the black button next to the display, it shows Average Fuel Economy. It also shows Estimated Range and Elapsed Time.
Either way, average 14 MPG seems not so odd IF you drive busy city/local streets most of the time.
If you still have the sticker (which was on the car window when you bought JK), check out the Fuel Economy section. It says that "16 CITY / 19 HIGHWAY - 13 and 19 mpg in the city and between / 16 and 22 mpg on the highway"... that's for Rubicon Unlimited. 2-door might be a bit better???

I am getting 14.5 to 15 in my unlimited with a lift and 33's. That is figuring it myself so it is pretty much right on. (the computer is actually pretty close since getting the lift and tires) That is mixed highway/city driving. If I just hit the freeway I can get about 16. I personally think the jeep gets pretty poor gas mileage. My 98 dodge ram with the 5.9, 105K miles and loaded with 400lbs of tools and the same size tires and it gets 15-16 pretty consistently.
Also, in comparison, my cherokee would get 17-18 and almost 20 if I just drove freeway. I had a rack and the spare on the roof too.
Good thing I am so used to crappy gas mileage.

Thats my excuse for upgrading anyways! hehe
Fuel mileage will always vary with two of the same vehicles in different locations/terrains and driving styles. I calculate my MPG's by simple math. I watch my trip meter which is reset at every fill up. Then during my next fill up I take the miles on the trip meter and divide the gallons of fuel I just pumped in, trying to top it off around the same spot each time. This should get you in the ballpark of an average. I currently average in my JK after 3 tanks 17.5 mpg’s. This is 80/20 driving, 80% highway/country 20% city.
Also a good thing to remember is that your engine is going through a break-in period, which once complete, your mileage may increase. My previous vehicle, an 05 F-150 4wd SuperCrew 5.4 liter was getting around 13-14 mpg when I first purchased it. Before I traded it in, I was getting an average of 16.5 every fill up. I started seeing an increase after 5000 miles on the drivetrain or so once components started to seat in.

It also seems that outside temp affects your mileage more than any other vehilce I have had. When it was really cold I was getting around 15-15.5. When it warms up I get closer to 17-18. That is however driving 25 miles to work on back roads all the way. I am betting this summer getting closer to 20 if the weather here in PA every warms up. So much for global warming...
I know wind affects it. We just took a trip down to North Carolina and on the way down, we averaged 21.3... on the way back about 18 when we had heavy head winds.
On the average on my commute I get about 17.3 and I run heavy freeway traffic, so I guess I would call that city driving. I know I'm averaging about $50 bucks to fill the tank and it lasts me aprox one week:toung: But all we have are jeeps, so we're used to it.
