I try and always use Shell mid grade. It sounds like you drive your Jeep about like me. I was able to correct my issue by the steps I have told you, but if you keep those same driving habits, you will deal with this periodically.

Took your advice, got gas at shell, only mid grade. Took it out on the highway and I changed my driving habits some too. Instead of staying below 2 grand I take it up to 3 grand before a shift. Instead of driving around at 40 in 5th, I'm keeping it in 4th. Got ccc but waiting to put it in till it goes above 40° overnight. Sounds like its slowly going away just with the better gas and more rpms. This weekend I'm pulling the plugs and getting new ones if their bad and scoping the engine to see what the combustion chamber looks like hopefully. Plugs should tell me what's going on.

Good deal. The CCC will definitely help. Have you checked to see if your Jeep uses any oil?

Yes, I used a little less than a quart with frame filter and 5w20. I switched to a wix filter and 5w30. Now maybe 1/4 quart in about 2000 miles, also put in a new pcv. I work for the company that casts almost all of trickflow and summit racings heads basically an aluminum machine shop and foundry. In the summer I plan on taking it in the shop to take it apart to see if this upside down rings thing has any truth to it. I'd like to see if 3.8 buick gn heads will fit on it. We had a gn that had trickflow heads and 20lbs of boost pushin 1500hp before it exploded. Anyway thanks

Yeah mine was consuming about 1 quart per 1 k, and I changed my pcv and went to 5w30, and my consumption has dropped too. I was actually thinking about installing a catch can at one point, but things are better now.

I lied, we make 3.8 heads for a company named champion out pf Florida not trickflow. Here's a pic.

This statement brought back so many memories of old friends and old cars, flooring the go-pedal while stating "have to burn the carbon out of it" with a grin.

Sorry, off topic but thanks for causing my smile.

On topic...should it be detonating that bad under no load at idle with just carbon buildup?
I hope it is not internal metal to metal contact instead.

The tapping at 2500 rpm was carbon build up I believe. The powerstroke noise while giving it gas at idle hasn't happened again I have to take off the heat shields and look at the manifold on the passenger side. I haven't heard it again maybe cause it was almost 55° when it did it and its been under 30° since. We'll see though. Oil level is checked at almost every gas fill up.

Also could have been bad gas. It was getgo gas which is cut with old gas I've heard so they can sell it cheaper. Either way the pinging under load is gone. If it makes the powerstroke noise again I'm taking a video with sound for more thoughts on it.
