This statement brought back so many memories of old friends and old cars, flooring the go-pedal while stating "have to burn the carbon out of it" with a grin.

On topic...should it be detonating that bad under no load at idle with just carbon buildup?
I hope it is not internal metal to metal contact instead.

This can definitely cause it. They will be switching to summer blend fuels soon which will help.

Its only when its warmed up, and it is only if I just burp the throttle a little. After it gets above 1500 rpm it's back to normal sound. Im thinking exhaust manifold. But you can see why I say powerstroke diesel sound.
