You're not alone on this whistle issue - there have been some pretty in-depth past discussions on a previous thread. What those folks (in the previous thread) concluded was that it was the noise from a "swirl" effect that was a combination of the the high volume of of airflow from a CAI (AIRAID or AEM, doesn't matter) and the shape of the throttle body. This would explain why the noise doesn't occur when you hit your "whistle range" on the tachometer in Park (no air is being "forced" into the intake without forward momentum!). End result of all the speculation and attempts at fixes: Nothing - you've got to live with it.

My experience: After I installed my AIRAID, I thought that I had gotten lucky, because I didn't have any of the "whistle" that others complained about... or so I thought then. As time went on, and I spent a little time admiring the engine sound without the radio on, I noticed that I do have this same whistle. It occurs for me precisely between 1700 and 2100 RPM; if the rev range goes above or below that point, the whistle is completely gone.

Having said that, I've found the most effective "fix" (since it won't go away) is to either listen to your music a bit louder (thus drowning out the whistle) or pretending that it's the "spool up" of a turbo (like my old WRX would make)... it's really not TOO annoying, except under conditions where I have the engine speed pegged right in that range for an extended period of time.

Others have tried using RTV in the throttle body, with no success. There was a TSB related to this on the Liberty's stock 3.7L engine, but does NOT apply to the JK (at least, not as of this writing).

So - to recap: I'm not aware of any current "fix," and general concensus among JKers is that it's the combo of forced-air from the CAI and the "hourglass" throttle body design, creating a "vortex" of air that is swirling fast enough to be audible... Hope this is helpful, and if you DO find a fix, please share with us all!

I have the same sound and I don't have an after market intake. It kinda sounds like squeeky brakes. weird

I too have the same sound, I believed it to be an air intake issue. I am planning on putting an airraid in, so I am disappointed to hear it will not resolve the issue. <sigh>

I'm pleased as can be with the AIRAID. Going only by seat-of-the-pants measurement, it really does seem to provide increased power (not like a supercharger would, but hey, it's only $225!). If you are experiencing the whistle without a CAI, go for the CAI - worst case, it gets a little worse, but you get more power and a better overall engine sound.

Did you get any improvement on gas mileage? If so, I can easily talk my wife into letting me get one!

MJS Jeep 888 - thanks for the reply. That makes sense; I wanted to ensure it wasn't mechanical. Louder music will have to work until I figure something else out.

As for mpg: over 1800 miles from Nebraska to NoCal through 3 mountain ranges at interstate speeds, my JK averaged 19.1mpg (with the stock BGF 32's)...not bad.

LOL at that. I know all about having to run the mod budget past the prettier half for approval...

I DID see an improvement in gas mileage with the AIRAID... I was getting about 15 miles per gallon prior to the install (the engine is still breaking in - still under 1K miles). After the install, I averaged 16 miles per gallon, and that's with the CAI installed halfway through the tank. I had some high expectations for this last tankful, and was hoping to break 17-18 mpg, but alas, a Nor'easter came in, and heavy 4WD usage coupled with some fun wheelin' in the snow dropped me under 14 mpg... but that's the exception, not the rule, and the engine's still got quite a ways to go before I'd call it "seasoned." All told, I'm going to estimate that my 50/50 highway/city commute will net me around 17.5 mpg once the engine is broken in fully, and that's with AT, 4.10 gearing, and the AIRAID. I'm no speed demon in my Jeep, but I'm no grandma, either... otherwise I could probably eek out 19 mpg!

Others that have installed a CAI have reported about a 1-1.5 mpg increase. Folks that have done a CAI install AND modded their exhaust have reported up to 2.5 mpg improvement over stock... but if you throw on bigger meats or a lift, you'll negate that fuel savings. Hope that helps somewhat...

So here's your battle plan: Tell her that the Wrangler is great, you love it, you'll keep it for all eternity, etc., but that you're disappointed with the gas mileage, and feel a little guilty that you're consuming so much gas. (Try to sound really sincere, unless this is totally unlike you). Then, try to get her to authorize the CAI along with a new cat-back exhaust (Flowmaster sounds nice - do a search on this forum and you can find some sound clips)... that way, you should save 2 mpg, which adds up. I can hear it now: "Honey, it practically pays for itself!"

Wow. I would LOVE to get that mileage... my last fill-up (as alluded to in the post I wrote right before I saw yours) was a paltry 13.968 (yes, hand-calc'd)! Then again, I haven't had "optimum" driving conditions, and was in 4LO with the heat cranked near the max... so hopefully Spring weather will make for better mileage (or, at the very least, lower gas prices!)

Lol! Nice plan, unfortunately that is completely unlike me. I just poked around a bit for a Flowmaster cat-back system for the JK and did not find one on their site. Any ideas where to locate one? Also, is there any place better than quadratec for the Airaid?
