Surface Rust Under the Car
Hi. New member and new owner, as of August 22, of a 2014 unlimited.
It is great to be a member of this forum.
I have been reading it daily trying to get as much info as I can on the new to me Wrangler.
My first post has to do with some rust on several places under my jeep. I bought my JKU with 350 mi, and it was delivered to the dealer in May, judging from the paperwork. I brought it home on Aug 22nd.
Here are some pictures of the surface rust. Is this something that will happen anyway? From what I see, the Differential axle is not painted, contrary to my 03 Tundra, where after almost 12 years, there is 0 rust on the (factory painted) axle. The other 2 pics are the back of the front wheels. Ignore the white specs; it is white paint after I run over a spray can that was lying on the street at night
Thanks for any input.

You should see all the Jeeps above the Mason-Dixon Line that see 6 months of road salt per year. Nothing to worry about, wire brush it and throw on a light coat of spray paint. It's a yearly task up here in the North.
Mine came off the train from Toledo and I took delivery within a few days. As soon as I got home I was all over underneath it and I had the exact same kind of stuff. going on.
Krylon Satin Black with the primer will make everything look good.
Does kind of make you feel a little sick though. I never did do my driveshaft as it kind of gives it that bad ass tough Jeep look.

Typical jeep obsession to keep parts looking rusty.. they've never bother coating or protecting any of these components.. doesn't mean they're useless, just means they look older than they really are.. I wouldn't go as far as powder coating them.. cause these areas do see a lot of abuse.. maybe some sort of rust inhibitor paint would help slow this eventuality down.
If you like you can freel free to take apart the rusty bits, clean them up with a wire brush and some scotch bright pads, then bedline them being careful not to get any bed liner in the attachment points, let it cure, slap it back together, no more rusting, and the bedliner will stay on the parts unless you hit them hard enough to break/tear the metal.
Yea. I sand rusty areas. Wipe with alcohol. Spray satin black spray paint. I was thinking of taking that gas tank sheild thingy off and sanding scraping painting the whole thing down.
Side note: when I did the RC body lift the top of the stock body mounts have big holes that fill up with water and shit. Some of my body mount bolts were complety rusted through where they could break.
That just one of a 1000 places water sits underneath our jeeps.

I believe the skid plate is the tank's only means of support. If you can't support the tank separately, all the plumbing and wires will have to be disconnected.
