I just got a new jku in June and my mechanic made a sarcastic comment about the rust on such a new vehicle. Unfortunately If it is what it is, ill be forced to temper my expectations. With a Massachusetts winter coming, the salt will corrode any hopes on a nice underbelly. Plus side is, that is doesnt affect my enjoyment of the jeep.

It's like when I found the first grey hair on my wife. Didnt make her any less fun.

I just tried out that fluid film shit... so far I like it. Did my whole frame and control arms. Then I put some on my soft top and rear plastic bumper to experiment.

Well then I guess you are willing to pay more than 34,000 out the door to get a vehicle with zero rust on components that will rust out a lot later than you or I will.
We are discussing suspension parts that even a $1,000,000.00 vehicle will come out of the factory with unpainted (or mummified).
As I've seen a thousand times before, people are complaining about things all vehicles have but because the Jeep is high off the ground they can see it.
OMG my muffler has rust.....what colour should I paint it

I have been reading posts here since buying my 07 JKUX last month. Since I am new to the Jeep thang, thought I would read, read, read and learn from the salty owners. There is a lot of good information on this forum as well as a lot of haters. I am just interested in finding a solution to the question of how to make the surface rust issue look better. Simply from an aesthetics standpoint. I have seen where people have simply cleaned and spray painted. Has this worked for you? Can you just hoist her up and spray where needed?

Cool

Well, I saw this thread and I guess you can say this is my #1 pet peeve.

Here is what I have done for surface rust under my '11 JKU...the dealer even was shocked on how nice the under body came out:

1) Wire brush or sandpaper any heavy spots of rust, then hit them and frame rails with breakeCleen (I like the CRC Red Brand)

2) Go to Home Depot or Kmart and buy at least 5-8 cans of Rust Oleum Rust Refromer in satin black : Auto Paint Chemicals Rust Reformer Spray Product Page

3) Basically drench the entire underbody, 2 heavy coats then let dry

4) Order 3 cans (this is enough IMO) of Eastwood internal frame treatment in black...rust proof the frame from the inside out, this stuff works : http://www.eastwood.com/internal-fra...lack-14oz.html

5) As a final top coat, I painted anything metal minus the exhaust in VHT Rollbar and Chasis Semi-Gloss (3 medium coats, 6 cans) : VHT Roll Bar & Chassis Paint

6) For the header downtubes, exhaust and rear muffler I did 2 coasts when warmed up of VHT Satin High Temp: VHT FlameProof? Coating

....now your as rust proofed as I would know how (did a lot of testing and research)

Here is shot of my JKU underside:

wow, jeepjk4 that looks great and thanks for the links in the different products you used.
How long have you had it undercoated like that? how has it held up?

i live in nj and i have tried multiple methods of undercoating including professional undercoating. Nothing seems to last longer than about 3 years without getting rust underneath it, etc... most recently i have been using fluid film once a year and it seems to help, but i might try the method you used.

Don't let the haters run you off. This is a good place to get info, and I'm with you on the rust thing. I was shocked at how rusty a new vehicle was so quickly, and yes I've seen the under belly of a lot of Silverados, because that's all I ran for 20 years, and I've never seen rust like on my JK
