Surface Rust Under the Car
Yes it is normal. I just traded my 09 wrangler that I had cleaned and coated with chassis black paint. Just got a 14 and was the same way. Cleaned and coated it also. Looks good after the coating. And should last.

I used the VHT satin roll bar and chassis. Got it at autozone and advanced parts stores. Just wire brushed and scotch Brite pad the rusty parts and painted. Very close match to original paint. Held up very well on the 09. Never had to touch up at all.

Thanks for the replies. I just find a little "unsettling" that a brand new vehicle will already have some rust. The axle is obviously not painted / coated, and it is normal, but it seems that the rust behind the wheels is because some parts "missed" the paint at the factory
OMG rust on suspension and drive train parts that are never seen on other vehicles unless it's on a hoist because you can't crawl under them. Go nuts and paint the h..l out of them if that's what turns your crank. These parts being talked about being unpainted may fail in about 50-75 years because of that and if you're still around, make a call to Chrysler customer service to complain about it.
In the mean time please don't suggest that it isn't just an aesthetic issue. I don't think we need to pay for necessary cosmetics at time of sale for a jeep that should be used where that paint is going to be chewed off through intended uses.
Reminds me of the 'OMG my muffler is rusting'/'What colour should I paint my muffler'/'Roll cage under padding unpainted' threads'.
Don't get me wrong. If you want a Jeep suitable for a fire truck parade I'm with you but really there is nothing wrong with what people are complaining about as far as vehicle service life and price point.

A guy I was just talking to has a TJ. Had the whole jeep stripped down to frame and derusted, sand blasted, new sections welded and bolted in, and painted. After one full year in new england the road salt made it look like shit again and started flaking again.
to order a new jeep and get it from the factory with rust all over the underside and your first investment needs to be rattle cans on a new vehicle period.
People can say omg how picky but any vehicle ive ever owned never had to be painted so often underside. My trucks @ about 150.,000 over ten years old still didn't have hardly a cans worth . These pigs take two cans every couple of months since day one. you actually have to figure it into your regular shopping list at wallyworld bedliner and rustolium. Think chrysler needs to start buying steel from usa NewEngland has a lot of salt on roads but these are coming out of the factory with lots of rust . Next time I wont order one from factory. It was not a pleasurable experience .
they also claimed youl be kept abreast of your vehicles build at the factory , A joke almost two months later and It was at dealers still didn't have information on the vehicle. not to mention riddled with crappy parts.

on mine it was rust from factory steel . (not surface rust on just a drive shaft ) even that shows a lack of quality though
any thing that was painted over just bled through in a short time . but yeh shitty paint job too
( both)only reasoning I could think of is they figure we go into muddy water anyway
my tie rods and all sorts of things were rustng within weeks of picking it up but , u cant go to the jeep dealer and say that they wouldn't do anything anyway but tell you its a jeep thingthey all do that ( it might not cause a problem but its not something we should have to keep up with monthly during ownership) bottom line
Fails the longevity test lol

Good for you. I for one do not think a Wrangler is cheap, not at $34000 plus tax, and should come with 0 rust FROM FACTORY. I guess I have high expectations...
