Default tire thoughts

I just put Mickey Thompson MTZ 33x12.5x17 mounted on Pro Comp 7005 rims with no lift or spacers and have no issues with rubbing at all. My JK four door is Black it this really looks sweet.

backspacing is 4.75" works out fine. sorry the only picture I have right now is the on associated with my signon. will post some this weekend. I was going to put toyo mt on my original 18" rims but too expensive and need spacers which put a strain on the wheel bearings.

Well I ordered a set today, the Mickey Thompsons 285/75R16. I am sticking with the stock wheels for now, so Im still not sure if the spacers are going to be neccessary, some say yes some no, but if needed I can grab a set real quick. Either way Im excited to get rid of the stock toy tires.

Now Im considering doing new wheels too. The stock rims are 7.0, and Mickey Thompson lists the approved rim widths of 7.5-9. On top of that the backspacing of 6.25 on the stock rims has me mildly concerned. Im thinking about getting a set of Cragar soft 8's, 16x8, with the 5" backspacing. Is it worth the extra $250, or will the stock rims bo ok still?

I got a good deal on the tires locally so I have a little bit of extra $, not much though. I was going to put it towards buying the AccuPro, but maybe wheels is a smarter move.

I see alot of people with 285/75/16 on the stock 16x7 wheels though, has anyone else had a problem with the fit on the wheel?

I've also seen a lot of others running 12.5" wide tires with 7.5" wide rims. It's possible but the tire companies don't recommend it. You should talk to the place you buy your tires from and see what they say.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I gotta make the decision. If it was just that Id go for it, but on top of that Im still a bit worries about the backspacing at 6.25", even with the 11.5" tires. Im wondering if between the wheel width and the backspacing itd be best just to spend the extra money on a set of Cragar Soft 8's 16x8 5 on 5. Only thing is I really like the stock rims, but the Cragars look awesome on the people Ive seen with them as well. Any experience with them? How do they hold up?

Bummer about your rims My stocks are 17 X 7.5 with a 6.0BS so I had no problems with an 11.5" wide tire.

As far as backspace is concerned, I'd say this: Figure out how wide your tires are now. They are probably 10.0 to 10.5" wide. That means the new tires are going to be .5 to .75 larger on each side. Now get under your vehicle and see what part is closest to your sidewall. On mine, it was the rear sway bar which was about 1" away from the sidewall so I could easily afford an extra half inch.
I may have also rubbed on the plastic air dam turning but I tossed that long ago.

I personally wouldn't go against the tire manufacturers recommended wheel size but you probably won't have any problems. If you do go with new rims, are you going to want a wider tire down the road? If so think about a 4.5 to 5.0 BS and an 8" wide rim.

I pretty much decided to just blow the extra cash and get the new rims. I'll go for some Cragar Soft 8's, the price is right for now and they look great on the JKs Ive seen them on thus far. Plus that will eliminate all the problems, 16x8 wheel with 5.0 BS.
