Default Tires on OEM wheels

Jeep has a 16" x 7" alloy for use on Grands and Wranglers. Can I put 285/75R16 (just a bit over 32") on these rims without spacers and have no rubbing issues? Same width as the OEM steelies, and I read 32" tires can clear. I'm assuming that if Jeep says 32" fits, then they must mean on their wheels.

Interesting, I'm thinking of doing this as well with a set of cooper ST's. Problem is, my local cooper dealer is being a bit of a tosser wrt to putting em on a 7 inch wheel, he says it won't work at all and the milage warranty on the tires will be void. He's saying 8 inch minimum for this width of tire. Now I'm not too concerned about the tire warranty, but are these tyres on stock 7 inch rims not pushing it too far? How does this setup handle on the highway, is it stable and the tires wear evenly? If you dropped pressures would they stay on the wheel?

I might try anyway and if it doesn't work ten I ca always get a set of 16x8 wheels for them when they are more widely available.

OK I have a basic wheel / tire question that may have been answered, but you know how the search function is here...

I am waiting (and waiting) on an Unlimited X with the factory 17" wheel package...

If I buy a set of factory Rubicon 17" wheel / tires, is it a direct swap? I know the tires are the same exact size, so it should be.
Are the Rubi wheels the same lug pattern and backspacing as the "X" 17" wheels?

What about just getting the Rubi tires on the factory 17" "X" wheels? Worth it or not?

Assuming this is a direct swap without using spacers, would using spacers improve the look or not? It is not going to be lifted for a year or so, and even then likley a 2" BB.

I appreciate any and all advice.

I have used Firestone Destination M/Ts for a couple of years now and MUCH prefer them over BFG and Goodyear M/Ts. My local dealer has put tires on my cars and Jeeps for years. If there was any chance it wouldn't be safe or void the warranty, he'd tell me friend to friend. I've run 285/75R16 on factory 16" alloys for three years. The YJ and TJ needed spacers, the JK does not. My first trail ride is next Sunday (4/29), so I can't talk extremes yet. I do have a Terraflex 2.5" BB with new shocks though. I also prefer a narrower stance off-road (mostly rocky terrain), so no spacers was fine with me.

Yes.

The lug pattern is the same. Although i am not 100% sure about the backspacing, i dont know the width of the X wheels, though i would assume it to be the same. Hopefully an X pilot will chime in on this one.

Your preference is the real question here. the tires should be fine on your rims. would you be happy with your rims? or do you want the Moab's or aftermarkets? I personally prefer the factory wheels on my Sahara. I will likely keep them for quite some time. (Just remember the larger the rim diameter, genrally the steeper the tire price)

Again, your preference here as well. Personally I am going to swap the rubber out and keep my stock wheels. I have the 1.5" spacers and will be using them as i am likely going to be getting wider than stock sneakers (and eventually a short suspension lift~2") Even if i wasnt going with wider tires and an innevitable lift, i prefer the wider stance/look and would still be installing the spacers.

true there are two concerns with proper fitment of a tire... the diameter AND the width. Think of it this way.... people have run 33-12.50s on 8" wide rims for years... If the tires you are looking at dont exceed 11", oughtta work fine. I do think that 7" is stretching it (haha!) with a 12" wide tire.

Thats a very good point, hadn't thought of it that way. You're right, cooper and bfg both say on their sites that min wheel width for a 12.5 inch tyre is 8 inches. So by that reasoning an 11.5 inch width should be fine on a 7 inch tyre. 285's are 11.22 inches so that improves it even further. Why on earth do they want an 8 inch rim for a 285 (11.22 inch) then? Well, screw em, I'm doing it anyway. Thanks for your help.

doe, i imagine that the reason they recommend an 8 inch wheel is that is what the tire was engineered to fit. Running a narrow rim tends to cause the tread to baloon a little. Running a wider rim causes the tread to be flatter, but makes the sidewalls more succeptable to damage and raises the chance or slipping a bead at low pressures. This affects the wear pattern somewhat... every brand is different.

Since the tire guy is saying that it will void the mileage warranty, I imagine that is exactly what it's about.
