They checked everything over all fluids (inc wsw and filed it), checked the allignment, they did a good job. They put my plates on with 4 count them 4 screws! Usually it's only 2. They put my locking gas cap on and my spare cover.
I think I owe them more donuts ;-)
Hey guys I think why the Jeeps cant tow more is due to the rear suspension setup. Its coil sprung instead of leaf sprung. All the trucks and even the xterra's are leaf sprung in the rear and thus allows greater payloads than softer coil springs. If you google the military spec Jeep J8 which is built off the 4 dr platform it is upgraded with leaf springs in the rear and couple other things to boost the tow rating up to around 7716 lbs!! Anyway hope this helps answer why our Jeeps cant tow more. BTW I have a 2007 unlimited, auto, with 4.10 gears and factory trailer tow package and it is rated to pull 3500 lbs, which it does just fine. There is no heavier duty radiator or auto tranny cooler in front of it either. Jeep also has a towing guide on their website at http://www-5.jeep.com/vehsuite/TowingGuide.jsp

take a look at how the hitch mounts to a cross member in the rear of the JK. Now take a look at how the hitch has side wings that mount to the frame and distribute the weight better on the Liberty. You get better load distribution on the hitch with the side wings to mount to the frame. It might have to do with the mounting to a frame cross member to show the diffrence of our towing capacity versus the Liberty. As for the 2d vs. the 4d I am gonna have to fo with the weight on the front tires also. But who knows I am just a firefighter not an engineer. Chris
If it has a 2" receiver and the wiring plug it has the tow package.
If your JK only has the hook, no tow package.
You can get a 2" receiver that bolts on for less than $100 and a cheap wiring harness if you need to tow.

In both cases, the load is conveyed to the frame side members. It doesn't matter if it is through a hitch beam, or through the rear cross member.
In fact, the rear cross member looks more substantial than the smaller beam on the type of hitches you describe.
A Jeep engineer who posted on another site said the difference in tow capacity between the JK and Liberty was engine cooling capacity. The air flow through the JK radiator is not enough to cover all situations while towing.
Bottom line (from an actual Jeep engineer):
The difference between the JK 2dr and 4dr towing capacity is vehicle length.
The difference between the JK and other Jeep platforms with greater towing capacity is engine cooling capacity.
