if it's any help, I was able to remove the mirror off my pickup by backing it into the side of the garage door.

worked really great, the mirror was off in a fraction of a second.

also stripped the paint off the outside of the garage nicely.

* Update, I still don't have it off. I've tried everything in this thread a dozen times. I keep spraying rust eater on it, hoping eventually something will give. I even had it at the dealership the other day for an oil change and made a game out of who could get it off. About 5 service techs tried with no luck as well.

put a small flat head screwdriver in the threads of the bolt and hit that with a hammer. should pop right off. good luck. Waiting, new jeep looks good. planning any big mods yet?

Man, I had the same issue as the poster. Can believe what a pain it was. The above worked best for me. I removed everything, went inside to work over a carpet to prevent damage. Put the longer screw in. Two smashes with a hammer and voila. As always thanks to you guys for the solution!

Okay....I just went through this very same problem last week. Rest assured that your mirrors will eventually come out. Forget what the instructions say about a slight tap/force. I had to use a hammer and bang on the top portion of the factory bracket with a hammer while I was holding the mirror. I would use a rubber mallet or something to protect the OEM bracket if I were you. The point is that you are going to have to get a little forceful if you are ever going to get those mirrors off.

"some force" is an understatement. I broke the houseing around the driver's side mirror before I was able to remove it. I used the advise above and threaded the bolt in a few turns. After several hits with a hammer the mirror popped out. Passenger side was much easier to remove.
