6" backspace or something close to that on stock wheels. Use the search button next time.

I've seen that, but what do I really need to know?

Is 4.5 good? seem so based on the faq.

What size tire on 17 x 8? will 4.5 keep it from rubbing or will I need spacers?

If I go with a big 33 will I need 2 inch lifts?

Less backspacing = good if you want a lift. Less backspacing = tires stick out more and rub whatever is in the wheel wells less. 4.5" is pretty much as low as they go. Most lift manufacturers recommend 4.5" backspacing or less, but I did not see anything 17" with less than 4.25". From the FAQ section already mentioned: stock backspacing is 6.25" if you run stock you'll need wheel spacers (not to be confused with spring spacers or budget boost (BB) ) to make your stock tires stick out more. Again - it's all in the modified FAQ.

There are a lot of variables in the equation. That's why you'll find some folks who say they run 33s fine with zero rubbing, and others who run 33s with some rubbing. I thought I was in the former camp--until I ran on Poison Spider Mesa at Easter Jeep Safari and experienced minor rubbing between one tire and the sway bar disconnect arm. Note that I have a 2.5" lift (2.5" front, 2" rear) and 4.5" BS on my wheels. 33"x10.5" tires. And a ton of weight up front from the bumper and winch. And, unlike most folks, my Jeep sits perfectly level without any additional correction.

Bottom line: You're going to get more reliable answers and less confusion if you are more specific in your questions: What size tires and what width wheels? Just a 2" lift, or do you plan to level the Jeep? And speaking of lifts, some brands raise the vehicle more than they advertise, so which brand? What other mods, especially in the suspension? How much weight on the front end (sag may be a problem)? Ask, and chances are that someone with that configuration--or close to it--will then chime in and offer you the best advice.

BTW: The 7089s are a great wheel.

4.5" backspace is good. It will not rub at all. 4.5 will keep them from rubbing, but if you want to keep the stock wheels, than you need spacers. Spidertrax preferably.

As for the tires, it really depends on what size tire you want. Once I save up for the money, I am going with 33's on 17x8 Pro Comp 7005s. A lot of people will say you will regret getting 33's and should have gone with 35s, but it really depends on what you like. 33's will allow you to run stock suspension, but 35's will need a lift if you don't want to rub at turns or bumps or when you have a lot of weight in your Jeep.

If you go with 33's, you won't need a 2 inch lift, but it does help. If you do decide to go with a lift kit, I suggest going with a BB. I'm going to purchase a Teraflex BB because they are recommended by a lot of people.

Nice Jeep.

Okay, I put in 2 in lifts... the car won't sit level?

(heck, it is stock, is it level now?)

Should I buy the bumper first to see how much it drags it down?

After the lift, I want nice A/T tires. Slightly wider, slightly higher. I just really want to change to a jeep that looks like I take it off road

Then I want to conquer the trails. I don't want to drown it in rivers as I've seen, I don't want to get so deep in mud that I'm cleaning up the underneath for days, I want to tackle the type of trails I saw in the 4 wheel drive magazine. i'm too old to be banging the heck out of myself. and I certainly don't want to flip it multiple times....

I'm confused. Less backspacing the tires stick out more? Seems like back spacing is the gap in the back of the wheel and that more of that means the tires stick in more... oh... i think I'm starting to get it...

I was thinking of tires before I was thinking of lift... so I'm really wanting to find a black rim (but not $300 a rim) wheels that I can put on a 33 in tire that is slightly wider than my current tires... I can't define slightly...

I've been looking at the show me your black wheels... show me your 33 inchs...
but I have to wade through page upon page. be nice if they would allow 50 posts per page... hm, can we adjust that in some setting?

Not sure if that helps or not, but basically the LESS backspacing you have then the further your tire/wheel will stick out...the MORE backspacing, the further it will sit in closer to the frame.

For example, the wheels I used to have on my JK were 16x8 with 4" backspacing and I didn't like how they were sticking out past the fender....so I bought some 16x8 with 5" backspacing and now they sit just under the fender where I want instead of sticking out.

Also, any 2"-2.5" budget boost or coil kit would be perfect for running 33's...but you don't HAVE to have a lift to run 33's, it just looks better and will perform better off-road obviously.

Here is mine....2.5" Rough Country Coil kit and 33x11.50x16 tires on Cragar Soft 8's with 5" backspacing:
