Another option if you need to route through tight spaces and dont want to install you own connector. It has the exterior end with a weather boot and a compact end that has screw on type connector.

I really like my Firestik MU-8R18 Coax w/FireRing Antenna Mount with a K-4R antenna stud mount. (note: K-4R has longer bolt for FireRing than K-4) No soildering or crimping. The cable comes with a mini-UHF connector installed and a mini to PL-259 adapter. The mini-UHF makes it easy to route the cable since it is only 7/16" diameter. (For reference: RG-58 coax - 1/4", PL-259 connector - 3/4")
The FireRing keeps the antenna insulated from the mount while providing a strong and corrosion resistant connection.

The install went smoothly and I can hear my buddy when he's within 50 ft of me, but we can't communicate at a longer distance.
We're both running similar setups with tailgate mounts and Cobra 75.
Any recommendations on what could be causing the issue? We have yet to tune, so that could be it.

Tuning has not been done, i was hoping i could get some short term use out of it without buying a meter.

Get the mount grounded, check your SWR with an external meter and go from there.
