Did I blow up my Cobra 75?
I'm getting this weird whine throughout all the channels now. It's not there when the vehicle is very first turned on nor does it start at any particular time. I'll be listening to channel 19 on the way home then this whine starts to build up and hold. Doesn't matter what station I'm on, how my squelch is adjusted, or even if the vehicles running. It's not alternator whine as I'm familar with that from my car audio days. Don't know what else it could be. We tuned the antenna to a SWR of 1.2 on 19 and 1.5 on 4 and 35. I'm at a loss.
Depending on where you have installed the junction box, the whine could be caused by a nearby fan motor. Just a thought. You may want to turn on the vent fan and run the switch from low to high and see if the whine reappears.
Windshield wiper motors can also cause a whine in some radios. Give it a test.

Radio was never turned on without a load, either a SWR meter or an antenna.
Radiios power comes direct from the positive of the battery and I have it grounded to the same grounding stud I'm using for my passanger side Lightforce light.

I would tap into either cigar lighter wires. (One is ALWAYS Hot the other turns on and off with the key) I used the ground wire from the cigar port as well..no body grounds.. That's why your stereo uses a wire in the harness for a ground and not a body ground. To avoid noise.
I am using the switched cigar port and I have zero noise... Solder the wires no cheapie crimp do-dads.
If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you find the time to do it right?

I have to ask as well........do you still have the whine if your squelch it turned all the way up?
Skip, at least you are in better shape than I am. I was never able to get my SWR below 3 anywhere it was tested. I can only dream of numbers that low. I still get my whine whenever the engine is running, but Cooltech did send me a bunch of detailed troubleshooting steps to try.
hey skippman.
ive got a midland 42 handheld, its almsot the same as the cobra and i have the EXACT same problem.
i did at first before i knew anything about cb's and swr's expose my cb to an swr of 9 for some time. i now cant even get any transmit power bars up when holding the transmit button.
i think mine is fried, but does anyone know how to tell for sure???
cheers
