In short, FRS stands for Family Service Radio.
What this is a very low power radio that has maybe a mile range at best.
Its suited for family camping to keep in contact with the kids if they want to wander.
There is also a GMRS which stands for General Mobile Radio Service.
These have a greater range, Usually 10 miles or better, depending on the terrain, and require a license to operate.
FWIW, Iv got a couple og GMRS units we use when traveling with friends in MH s and the best range we have gotten was about three miles. That was with both radios being inside the MH s and using no outside antenna.
All thats required for the license is fill out a form, pay a fee and you get the license from FCC.
Hope this helps somewhat.
