JK CB & HAM Radios Bulletin board forum regarding all topics concerning CB and HAM radios, the installation of them in your Jeep JK Wrangler. This would include antenna mounts, wiring, tuning and usage.

Is it time to beef up the FAQ?

Well...from a complete noob with CD/HAM etc....how about

What is FRS?

Also, maybe an explanation about the solar cycle debate so that we can cut down on the argument threads about that.

In short, FRS stands for Family Service Radio.
What this is a very low power radio that has maybe a mile range at best.
Its suited for family camping to keep in contact with the kids if they want to wander.
There is also a GMRS which stands for General Mobile Radio Service.
These have a greater range, Usually 10 miles or better, depending on the terrain, and require a license to operate.
FWIW, Iv got a couple og GMRS units we use when traveling with friends in MH s and the best range we have gotten was about three miles. That was with both radios being inside the MH s and using no outside antenna.
All thats required for the license is fill out a form, pay a fee and you get the license from FCC.
Hope this helps somewhat.
