Default Anyone install a backup camera?

I am looking to install a backup cam but I need to know what lights to tap into? What color is the wire for the reverse light and which is the ground wire?

Also how do I run the wire from the cam to the reverse wire. The only way is to remove the tail lamp, but then wont the tail lamp not seal right with the camera wire running out of it? Is there some other way to route it back there?

I saw a thread in the electrical area/section that detailed someone doing that. He installed the camera in the middle of the spare tire and used the mygig for viewing I believe.

no you will not have a 'seal' problem at all. Take off your lens assembly and have a look behind it, you'll see that there is a wire loom hole sitting there ready for you to pass the wires through down to your camera...as for figuring out which wires to tap into, I did this awhile ago and can't remember if it's as plain as day to identify being that there is only two wires going to the light or if I used a tester light to find it....just pop it off and have a look, really easy, just remember if you need a ground tap into the solid black (-) wire, and if I remember I think it was a white wire for the lamp (+), solid black is usually always negative (ground)...oh and if it's a loom of wires just use a tester light and poke the wires (while a buddy put's the shifter in reverse) til you identify which wire lights up while shifter in reverse

Thanks. So that hole that is there for the wiring, where does that lead to? Inside the tailgate?

I used the drivers side for mine, and I suggest same for you 'cause the wire loom hole runs to the underside of the body...pull the drivers side tailight off and poke your wires for camera through that hole and you'll see them come out under the body, if you have a hitch with wire assembly you can always run the camera wires through it cause the trailer light wires hook up to the driver side tailight

So I can just bring the wire from under the body up through the seam where the rear bumper meets the body and then along the side of the license plate bracket?

sorry at work right now...I'll tell you what, I'll go take some pics later and post 'em tonight 'cause I'm not sure my words are doing my description justice.

1. What system are you mounting ?
2. What do you plan on mounting the camera too? (i put mine on the bumper just above the hitch receiver)

it's really quite easy. Firstly...I'm telling you, your gonna have to take that light assembly off (drvr side) it will all be clear once you remove it and peer inside...at no time will you have a wire running on the outside for all to see, cause that's how it kinda sounds you might have it figured....
Hang tight and I'll get you pics later....
I installed the cheapy VR3 camera system, it's wireless (ie the camera sends the signal wirelessly to the monitor) though the camera and monitor require their own power.......if you only want your camera to come on while reversing, than do what I did and take the + source power for camera and connect it to the + feed for your reverse light on the driver side light assembly.....or you can always run a toggle switch inside and power it on command when you want it

and if your just having a hard time identifying the right wire....get to your local parts source, or pep boys (i believe thats U.S) and get yourself a $5 tester light...looks like a pointy screwdriver with a clear handle and a black wire and aligator clip coming out the top...you use the aligator clip to clamp onto the body for a ground source while you poke through the wire casing with the tip to find the wire you need...when you hit the wire that only lights the tester up while reverse is engaged you've got the wire you want

I used the white w/ purple trace, which is the parking lamp.
Black is ground.
For use as a trail cam or monitoring towing, reverse wasn't exactly a viable option.

Also, I tapped into the wire on top of the inner wheel well, under the carpet, above the rubber grommet to the dead space behind the lamp. (I swear, that space needs filled with a compressor or something!)

The fabric sleeve for the CHMSL and gate latch wires has room enough to add cam wires.

sorry it took another night, but here's the photos
Not sure if you've already figured it out on your own. However, if your hooking up your camera to only come on while reverse is engaged than you simply need to splice into the green and white wire for your power source, and the black wire for your ground....really easy to find, only two wires supplying the reverse bulb....
in my pic I use a brown and white wire (it's what I had lying around)
