Manual or Auto for offroading
My last 4 or 5 cars were all auto, even the sports cars. When I was younger I loved the manual for racing, testosterone
, etc... but eventual began to value the comfort and ease of auot.
I bought a manual in the jeep for the silly reason that it "seemed more like a real jeep". My 07 JK introduced me to the sport of off-roading and rock crawling. I'm happy that I'm learning the sport with a stick. It has forced me to really understand how to control the vehicle on steep climbs, over rock gardens, etc... Perhaps it is harder than an Auto, but as a noob, I appreciate the challenge and have a blast in my rig.
One of the unexpected benefits was the retention of power as I upgraded the rig, 35" tires, heavy bumpers, etc... I was able to get away with 4.88 gears because of the manual, (5.13 were nearly impossible to get while I was doing the upgrade).
Additionally, I tow a trailer with my rig and that puts the tranny under a lot of stress (especially on mountain roads). Climbing over the santa cruz mountains a few weeks ago, I was happy to have the stick for more precise control over shifting.
I'm not sure what my next Jeep will have in it. I could go either way. Let's hope its a number of years before I have to find out!

I liked my manual when I had it but the Auto is just more effortless. Less things to have go wrong with an auto. Auto is under warranty. Also alot less clunking around which means its easier on your drive train. I think auto is better in almost every way except for:
1. Showing your "true" skills as a "true" wheeler
2. Being able to have a hand throttle (I used it as a off road cruise control which was awesome)
3. Being able to just press in the clutch quickly on a steep uphill climb in case you start to roll or slip off line. With auto you have to throw in neutral which isnt hard im just not used to it yet.
4. Peeling out and doing donuts in snow covered parking lots.

Manual, but I could definitely see some benefits to an auto. Namely restarting on a steep hill. Left foot brake, right foot accelerator.
But with the 6sp, just shut it down, put it in 1st & 4lo and start it up.
I'd probably be about Manual 52:48 Auto. But since I have to drive it daily as well that's enough to sway it to the 6sp. I couldn't believe how much trouble I had finding a 6sp Rubicon Unlimited.
