I'd much rather have properly backspaced wheels, but alas I'm currently running spacers myself. As already suggested, buy quality.....not some cheap ebay spacer. Install properly and maintain em. I typically just double check the lugs when I have wheels off for whatever reason....which for me is pretty occasionally. No issues yet with used set of Spidertrax I picked up a while back.
Be sure whatever spacers you buy are hubcentric, make sure to remove all of the brake rotor assembly clips, torque spacer lugs to 100ft-lbs.

SpyderTrax spacers now have a recess machined into the backsides of the spacers that allow you to keep the rotor retention clips.
Before installing any spacers, it’s a good idea to wire brush any rust from the hub and face of the rotor that the spacer will mate to. From there, a thin coating of antiseize around the hub - wiping off excess residue - will keep your spacers from corroding and locking onto your hubs in the same manner that most of our hub-centric alloy wheels do...

Been running spidertrax for about 2 years now with no issues.
No downside as far as I can tell, unless you run into a tire store that won't fool with them when it comes time to have some work done .
