April is a good starting time as the bugs still aren't that bad, and you can start feeling some actual heat from the sun.....lol. If you want to fish though, June/July is peak season. If I was you I would also really think about spending some quality time on the AlCan as well. I mentioned here awhile back that on one of my trips up the AlCan, I ran into a couple guys that were each driving modified volkswagons.....kind of a somewhat tamed down baja buggies. The told me they were taking the whole summer and driving the AlCan super slow, so they could find every side trail and take off on it. They said some would only go a couple hundred yards, but other would go for miles. With the isolation of the AlCan some trails are barely recognizable from overgrowth, so you had to go slow to even see them. They found some amazing places that weren't on any maps or mileposts. They looked to be having a blast.
I guess it depends on your definition of road. You can absolutely drive 100 miles on dirt in Nevada without hitting a paved road. It might be hard to do it without hitting a dirt road, but there is no question you can get far away from civilization (maybe not by Alaskan standards though). I've only been to Alaska once...I hope to get back soon and take my kids. I spent a week fishing on the Kenai...beautiful is simply not a word sufficient to describe Alaska. I can only imagine what those of you who live there get to see when you hit the backcountry.

Yes....the "Bear Man".......lol. No last I heard they shut him down because he just wouldn't stop feeding them. I don't think he ever got fined or did any time. His thing was pretty much all black bears......if I recall.

Oh....btw, found this last weekend a couple miles from the house. They're not all denned up yet. Sorry about the lousy camera phone quality.

Hope you get back here with your kids.....all kids need to see it.

Yes, that's what I mean....if a person was to take off on foot in any direction, would he come upon a road within that distance...paved or not. Interesting enough, NV was the one place that I was thinking it may be possible. Growing up in Tahoe, I spent some time in the desert around Carson City and Reno. Do the wild Mustangs still roam freely out there?

Indeed, I'm glad I was able to see the Alaska I have seen in my almost 30 years up here. And altho I jumped around from float plane to float plane, in the vastarea west of the Alaska Range, I've really only seen a pretty small part of the state. And as you said, Alaska is beyond description.

Sorry about the hijack. I guess if we want to continue on we probably should take it to the AK BS thread....

Yep, sorry for the hijack. To give you a quick answer though, the mustangs are still here and I take my kids to see them at least 3-4 times a month, particularly in the spring to see the colts and foals.

If you mean in a Jeep, Canyonlands National Park White Rim Trail. And in The Maze if you're on foot. ATVs not allowed in the park, though. Big Bend National Park also has awesome open space--a million acres (including adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park) of wide-open country--the only fence I remember was around the park dump. Not certain about ATVs there, but probably not. You may be able to cobble something together in Colorado. I think some of the smaller communities allow ATVs to pass through when using specified streets to access backcountry trails. I'd check out Wells' Colorado book, which is written for Jeeps, bikes and ATVs.

Thanks for the info on Alaska. I'm thinking we're going to take a month for this trip--if I can convince my friend to stay away from his home/wife that long. We plan to return on the ferry (he lives north of Seattle), so won't spend a lot of time doing that. And we plan to at least reach the Arctic Circle--and maybe Deadhorse.

AGREE! My favorite thread as well. The only problem is the jealousy I start to feel because my jeep isn't as built as many of these. Oh well...soon enough...
