I installed handles in the same location as what scouter posted a picture of and my wife and I use them daily to get in and out. I have a stock X s package, and I added side steps. The handles and side steps really made getting in and out less awkward.
I have it down where I pretty much "swing" myself in and out

The stool and grab handles are a top choice but having been around elderly and even disabled people a lot (including my parents) even with a stool and handles I know a bunch who still could not get in the jeep. A mini-van would be more comfortable. Anything where they are about butt even (meaning lower part of the butt cheek so they can slide in and up a bit) with the seat to no lower than a high chair level with the seat is a great choice. The less bending down or going up the better. Keep in mind there is such a thing as too low for the elderly as well as too high. If she can do steps well however a single or even two step stepstool is a great option and much cheaper than the rental and more usefull in the long run.
