The numbers just don't add up.

Jeep is worried about 'cannibalization' of Wrangler sales. Jeep sold roughly 100,000 Wranglers last year, they figure a Jeep truck would take sales away from that & take them out of that production 'sweet spot'. Say they lost 10% of Wrangler owners that went to a pickup = 10,000 units.

They would be bringing over someToyota Tacoma owners also:
Toyota Tacoma Calendar Year US Sales:
2005 = 168,831
2006 = 178,351
2007 = 173,238
2008 = 144,655

Figure 144,000 & they lost 20% (an ambitious number) to the new Jeep truck = 28,800 units.

The poor Dodge Dakota guys have to buy something with the demise of their pickup line. Say an optomistic 50% went to a Jeep pickup (versus a fullsize Dodge)
2008 = 26,044
2009 = 10,690
2010 = 13,047

13,000 x 50% = 7,500 units.

Even if you managed to bring some Colorado/Canyon and Frontier guys over, you would be hard pressed to come up with a total 50,000 unit demand. That is a Long way from where they need to be, not to mention the politics involved with Dodge

THEN AGAIN, Toyota only sold 15,000 FJ Cruisers last year.

Two quick thoughts:

- FJ numbers have me thinking build an actual pick-up again (no JK conv)
- JK iPhone App rules!

Almost forgot about the end of the Ford Ranger, they sold about 50,000 of them in 2010. Not all Ranger owners will opt to go full-size. Along with the Mazda cousin going away, they may have some truck guys in the ready for a Jeep Pickup -

Couple of 'fun facts' I discovered:
Gladiator
Overall width = 72.1"
Overall length = 176.9"

Tacoma Access Cab
Overall width = 72.2"
Overall length = 190.4"

I saw the new grand wagoneer today. Isn't it just a Durango re badged? Why not a Dakota with a JK powertrain and suspension?

you have to include the international market for numbers as well. Aussies love their utes, or small pickups as you guys call them.

Good point. The love crew cabs down under. Another reason to build an actual jeep truck...not a JK conversion.
