My 09 2 door is a manual.
My 2012 4 door rubi will be an auto.
Ill have one of each. the 4 door will be for "overlanding" where as my 2 door is for rocks

After reading through all these posts, I'm feeling better and better about buying my automatic 2012 Sahara.

I was really worried that somehow, I was "wimping out" by not sticking to a manual tranny (which I have had in all the vehicles I have ever owned), especially in a Jeep.

Just ordered and received a copy of the "Four-Wheeler's Bible" 2nd ed. by Jim Allen. Although it gets very, very technical very quickly, he seems to have a very high opinion about the auto transmission. I still can't seem to grasp the idea of "locking differentials", etc. etc. but hopefully, I will begin to understand soon.

All my pre-conceived notions about going off-road (which I still have never done) with an automatic appear to be WRONG.

Boy, I have an awful lot to learn!

All best, and trying to catch up with you folks,
Joe

if you ever rock crawl or find yourself on steep hills behind slow rigs, you'll appreciate an auto tranny.

I have an auto due to ankle issues where I can't run a clutch any longer....unfortunately I am only 44 years old too! Damn, I had hoped this crap wouldn't start until my 70's.

I just hope enough people still buy manuals so they don't get rid of the option, like so many auto makers have. It's really difficult to find a manual these days!
My answer is simple. Because I couldn't stand the look of the 2011 interior so I had to scramble to find find a 2010 that I liked since I bought it August 2010. I went through endless searches to find what I wanted and couldn't find a 6 speed with what I wanted, and all of the 6 speeds I could find were very bare bones and I didn't want that. Had they not ruined the interior, I would have ordered a 2011 with a six speed.

When do you find time to work? My sister commutes 20 miles in DC and it takes her more than 2 hours each way.

I just find it funny we have to justify our autos are not mall crawling family SUVs. I love a manual but have an auto. It still wheels good and comes with the HUGE plus my wife and kids can wheel it with much more confidence than a manual.

Autos are better for rock crawling. Not trying to offend anyone but if the OP would do a little research, he would find that the benefits an auto has compared to a manual, the auto actually has more benefits for the item he mentioned "rock crawling"
