Why all the autos?
After reading through all these posts, I'm feeling better and better about buying my automatic 2012 Sahara.
I was really worried that somehow, I was "wimping out" by not sticking to a manual tranny (which I have had in all the vehicles I have ever owned), especially in a Jeep.
Just ordered and received a copy of the "Four-Wheeler's Bible" 2nd ed. by Jim Allen. Although it gets very, very technical very quickly, he seems to have a very high opinion about the auto transmission. I still can't seem to grasp the idea of "locking differentials", etc. etc. but hopefully, I will begin to understand soon.
All my pre-conceived notions about going off-road (which I still have never done) with an automatic appear to be WRONG.
Boy, I have an awful lot to learn!
All best, and trying to catch up with you folks,
Joe

I don't mean to offend anyone of you highly outspoken individuals but.....spending time on this forum has made me notice the over abundance of automatics! I mean doesn't that go hand and hand with mall crawler and soccer mom? I have only, and would only buy manual jeeps. I just hope enough people still buy manuals so they don't get rid of the option, like so many auto makers have. It's really difficult to find a manual these days!
I just find it funny we have to justify our autos are not mall crawling family SUVs. I love a manual but have an auto. It still wheels good and comes with the HUGE plus my wife and kids can wheel it with much more confidence than a manual.
Autos are better for rock crawling. Not trying to offend anyone but if the OP would do a little research, he would find that the benefits an auto has compared to a manual, the auto actually has more benefits for the item he mentioned "rock crawling"
