Will the 2 door survive.
The 2 door will never be gone. It will probably wind up 50/50. Some folks will just want the 2 door, that;s the way it is. And some who can afford it may have one of each. Variety is the spice of life!
Hi
The 2 door is tight inside but it is also tight on the outside, but it is still huge for me and the forest roads, I had the 2 door Suzuki Jimny with a 1.3 liters engine before and it is alot smaller.
If I should buy again, I might consider the 4 door.
Here is my setup for three people on camping. It can also be done with four people but then it would be smart to have more modern and then smaller equipment than we hade.
Here we have two tents, a big table, 3 chairs, 3 sleeping bags, 3 madrasses, a cocking stove, the grey thing is a Waeco CDF 25 fridge, perfect fit when the backseat are up. To get more space we used two Bestop Saddle bags and a Trasharoo on the spare wheel for sleeping bags etc and a RPB roof net to use for storage, like sleeping bags, clothes etc.

Movie from that trip, not the best

My girlfriend and I we are soon going for a trip, so I folded the backseat and put in a bigger fridge, a Waeco CF-40, perfect fit on the left side. On the right side You can have a waeco 50 or 60 liters fridge when the backseat is flipped.
I think that the flipped backseat add some security for the cargo, if we need more space we could take out the backseat.
Just a test photo with a Waeco CF-40 fridge without handles in my new 2 door 2012 wrangler
And no, my vehicle is not black it is green, Black Forest Green

While the 4 door does have a place and has opened up the lifestyle to many who otherwise would not have been able to own a jeep, the 2 door will survive. As an off-road vehicle the only spot the 4 door beats a 2 door is in hill climbs. The 2 door has better break-over angles, which is something jeep uses as a sales point, has a tighter turning radius, and is over 10% lighter.
I have a 2010 JK and with what is basically a 1.25 inch lift I am able to go over things the JKU needs almost 3 inches for. I will admit there are times where I'm a bit jealous of the storage capacity and friendliness of the JKU. Giving my parents a ride is always interesting with 2 doors. I guess if I ever get married and have kids then I'll be getting a 4 door... for the wife to drive while I wheel in my 2 door.
And as far as removing the rear seat, I've taken mine out several times, however she seems to ride a little smoother with the extra weight.

I like driving my buddies 2 dr around, but even he admits he'd rather have the 4 door. He is sold on it for his next buy....if for anything just the extra space in the back, not to mention we both have families. I can't imagine cramming all that camping gear into a 2 dr without having serious racks.
I love my 2dr. You may consider accessorising it. If I ever need to haul more gear I either attach a trailer or hitch rack or put on the hard top which has a rack and rail system on it. So many options. If I had adults who beaded to ride in the back seat I would lean toward the 4dr though. The little trailer solved all my worries though.

She's not quite old enough for the "are we there yet?".
