Next time you go to Ouray make sure you do Poughkeepsie Gulch off of Engineer's Pass. It has some fun wheeling obstacles and spectacular view of Lake Como.

Without a doubt. I was rather upset this trip that I didn't get to spend as much time on trails as I really wanted to, combined with the fact that a couple of the trails I had planned on running were closed (such is the nature of the beast). The next trip to Colorado will be specifically for trail runs and I plan on spending a decent amount of time in the Ouray area exploring the trails and ruins. Photography had always been a hobby of mine though I never took on to it much since I gave up my Pentax SLR (non-digital) and got a Point-and-shoot. But the photography opportunities are plentiful and now I have a better idea of what to expect when it comes to remote campgrounds off some of the trails as well.

Poughkeepsie Gulch is on the list to do - not sure how I'd fare without lockers, but worst case scenario, I get the chance to try out the winch if all else fails . Sweet pics by the way! Wish I lived close enough to make short weekend runs to Ouray - but a 14 - 15 hour one way trip just won't allow for that on short notice. Definitely envious of you being closer.

Dude, that's always the case isn't it? Each time I go up there, I think to myself that there just isn't enough time....Anyhows, you could definitely make it up Poughkeepsie without lockers if you pick the right line.

As for DSLRs, here's my two cents: Buy a mid-cost DSLR (T2i or 7D) and invest the money saved in one or two nice lenses, maybe a zoom and one prime. For Canon, that means buying "L" series lenses. The lens makes a big difference in picture quality. Good luck with the purchase, you won't regret it. Thanks for the compliment on the pics.

Haha... I'm not known for taking "right lines" , but nevertheless, I still plan on doing Poughkeepsie Gulch my next time back there (let's just hope there's a group so if I end up on the wrong line, there's help and guidance ).

I did look at the T2i initially, but seeing as it's in the $799 (body only) - $899 (kit lens) range, I wasn't too thrilled. I know, it has nice specs, but may be a bit more on the higher end side for my needs at the moment - the D5000 on the other hand is a little closer to the range ($620.00 online with the kit 18-55mm lens) which leaves me room to get the 55-200mm lens or the 70-300mm lens or a 35mm lens and still stay relatively under $1K. But I might look into it more - still undecided on the Canon - Nikon deal and have not yet completely ruled out the Pentax K-x or Panasonic Lumix series either. The Canon and Nikons both have good solid reviews and I know they both have their own set of loyalists, but what I do like about the D5000 is the fact that it has a tilt LCD for the tougher shots. Thanks for the suggestions though; the 7D might be a touch out of budget for me at this point

Great shots. Thanks for sharing. Two friends have moved to Colorado in the past three years and I really need to go visit.

Thanks Long Arm . And a beautiful state you have for sure. Our plans for next year is to check out Utah - Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Zion as far as National Parks go, then MOAB (goes without saying) to St. George, Monument Valley - Grand Canyon to Ogden and Salt Lake. And I'm going to try my best to make the trip going through Ouray and hit a few trails before going into Utah. You definitely owe it yourself to check out the southwestern side - it's just spectacular.

Thanks . I've been refining my photo collection from Colorado the last few days and set a bunch of them as desktop backgrounds and screen savers. Everytime I see it, I just feel the urge to go back out there.

Just wanted to say that I ended up taking your suggestion alongwith another good friend's recommendation of Canon and bought the T2i yesterday

Trust me - my wife's been doing the same since we got back - campers! Makes justifying that Hemi upgrade that much easier . But jokes aside, you'll love it - awesome place!

Thanks Eddie. I need to hit up your neck of the woods someday. Maybe in a year or two - give me time to make my rig a tad more capable; also gives the driver time to become more capable
