do you know how much 3/8 rope will fit on the winch drum ? i duplicated your design(with a few changes) but have to lower my top to the ground and want to know how much rope will fit before the it srarts to bind on the winch drum. might have to use wire rope. thanks, great design!

Start with a roll of 50'. If you find it binds up cut some rope and melt the cut end with a heat gun so it doesn't fray.

My winch is a heavier load rating than the OP's but I have 100 ft of rope on it.

thats what i figured but wanted to check, i welded up some 1x1 square stock instead of the channel strut just because thats what i had. the winch and rope is the last things i have to get to be completed, thanks for the info

I ended up ditching the strut and have three strands of the rope going from the winch to the three points the strut supports. I'm not going to floor though so that might be a bit too much rope for you. My critical distance was the amount of height I can get. I put a platform under the top and raise it to the ceiling, not having the strut in the stack-up helps me get more space.

good option, i can't use my garage, so i'm using my kids swingset as the lifting point, its top beam is eight feet high, works good. then i'm building a platform with pnuematic wheels to lower the top onto, then i can wheel it around and into my garage. is good cause it keeps it easy to move around.
