Is crimping the right way to go or should these be soldered?

Crimped, soldered and shrink wrapped. Push your shrink wrap on first and way back so it doesn't get any heat. Put some flux on the wire and then crimp on the end piece. Use a plumbing torch to heat the end piece and then solder it. Cool it down, push the shrink wrap over the joint and carefully heat it up to shrink it.

I'm assuming if I don't have the tools to crimp or solder wire of that diameter I should just try a boat or welding supply store

Depends on how much they would charge you. It might be cheaper to just buy yourself a plumbing torch. I don't think they are that much unless you get the fancy instant on kind. As far as crimping, just use vise grips if you are going to solder anyways.

I work at a truck repair dealer that sells parts and they sell battery cable also and they will cut it to length and shrink wrap it all for you. So if you have a Mack, freight liner, Peterbilt, kenworth etc anywhere near you that would work too
