Actually I think the first is very useful for off roading as re-geared. If I didn't have the extra leverage then teeth start to break under strain (esp. if you go to 37s). Driving around town, it doesn't matter really esp. with an auto. I would love it if fifth gear (there are only 5 in the auto) was super deep and an effective O/D, but it's not. You drop from like 1.0 in 4th to .83 in 5th. 3rd to 4th is 1.41 to 1.0. I think .67 would be a much better o/d gear, but wouldn't be if you had 3.21s or even 3.73s. .67 might be OK with 4.10s and stock tires.....but it is what it is

I'd love to be turning 2,000 rpm at 70, but it just ain't so.

As an aside, 3.21s are much beefier than 4.88s, but the next weakest thing would go when straining against an object. You get what I mean.....

I'm running 5.13 with 37's on my 2012 JKU (Auto trans). Honestly, after driving 500 miles, wish I would've gone with 4.88. It has loads of power and I'm sure with the 4.88 due to the Pentastar, it still would've had plenty of low end.

5.13:

65 mph = 2600 rpm
70 mph = 2800 rpm
75 mph = 3020 rpm
80 mph = 3275 rpm

***The mileage starts dropping like a stone after 70mph with this gear set***

This engine really kicks. The transmission is totally different than the pre 2011 (not sure about 2011 itself) and feels a little lower geared than my 2009 auto. For me, the 4.88/37" would've been a better balance between highway (weekly weekend winter trips to the ski slopes) and wheeling in the summer than the 5.13/37" I went with. To put this in perspective, my 2009 had 5.38 gears....and I wouldn't ever dream of putting that in the new Jeeps.

To each his own....hope this helps.

I wouldn't say first is worthless now. If starting on a hill then I use 1st still. But for most flat ground starts I can start in 2nd. Granted I have the manual transmission. I believe that having the low 1st gear will be very helpful on the trail. Now I can actually set my cruise control in 6th gear on the freeway and it will still climb moderate hills.

I always use 4L for off-roading myself.

Any ideas or input on what re-gearing does to your warranty?
