Axle Seals
Thanks Doc, I understand what your saying and I realized I wasn't using the correct terminology in part because I didn't fully understand all the pieces/components. I believe I understand now and thanks for bearing with me on this. On the chevy, I had water intrusion via the rear differential housing. The truck had 70k on it and the seal wasn't perfect anymore. )
Start simple, THEN get complicated
The reason your chevy died was (in order):
Vent tube popped off or cracked
fill plug was loose or missing
axle TUBE seals were bad
pinion seal was bad.
same thing with your jeep will apply as it ages. Just like I said: check your fluids while at camp after water crossings.
If you want to upgrade your water crossing abilities I would start with relocating or modifying your vent tube. There is currently a thread on this on the first page.
now that you have been set straight on what you are actually talking about, for your Moab trip, bring ujoints and extra of every type of fluid you have in your jeep. diff, oil, coolant, tcase, blinker. there aren't enough JK's on the trails yet that you can count on someone else carrying the parts you may need.
lol, I'm surprised you didn't say I needed a can of dialtone and a yard of flight line
I'm just getting up to speed with this, my Jeep is still getting built out at the dealership back home. I should have some pics soon as they get more of the parts. Normally I would build this myself and figure things out as I go along. I only have 2weeks home and I'll be back here until Christmas.
