hydraulic assist I imagine is probably better for people like you who go wheeling often or rocking some large tires
When you're wheelin in extreme off camber situations, or big rocks, you can run in to a situation where the position of the jeep, combined with the obstacle, dictates where the tires are going, and hence how the steering wheel is turning. It is often NOT where you want. The steering wheel essentially gets "locked" and you can't turn it. Even if you were an 800 lbs gorilla and you could muscle that steering wheel to turn, you'd just end up bending the sector shaft. The hydro allows you turn turn that steering wheel like a hot knife through butter, and the steering box sends PS fluid down in the the ram which is pushing/pulling the TR in corresponding direction. The stress is removed from the steering box and sector shaft, and transferred to the they cylinder which is sitting parallel with the TR. That's the basic explanation at least. Definitely not something most people need. Even wheelin pretty decent stuff, I'm 6 years in and just getting around to it. It's not a situation you run across every time you hit the trails by any means. It's also not something that makes a jeep any cooler than another one. In fact, in my eye, it's just one more thing to maintain and/or break.
