You can disable it completely for that session by pressing the esp button for 7 seconds. After you cycle the engine, it will go back to normal. When I'm off road, I just press the esp button for a second and it partially disables it. This still allows for some fun ie. doughnuts and such.

First, RTFM.

Second, you can't turn ESP off fully in 2WD without modifying your Jeep... in 4HI, you can partially OR fully disable ESP:

To partially disable ESP in 4HI, press the ESP OFF button... this'll put the ESP into a more lax mode.

To fully disable ESP in 4HI, press and hold the ESP OFF button for 5 seconds; you'll hear a chime and your odometer will say "ESP OFF" if you're successful.

In 4LO, ESP is automatically disabled for you.

Happy Jeeping!

Default 2 solutions

Aussie, et al,

I feel (well, felt ) you're pain. Here's a link to the thread dealing with installing the toggle switch:https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...ontra+code+esp

For anyone out there with an '08, you can follow the procedure below, found in the owner's manual. It takes a few tries to make it work, I've found, but it completely disables the ESP without having to lose your anti-lock brakes or risk the dealer bitching about warranty violations.

" The following procedure will disable ( or re-enable) ESP functionality in the vehicle.
1. Shift the transfer case into the 4H range position.
2. Turn the steering wheel until it is centered and the wheels are pointed straight ahead.
3. Cycle the ignition key OFF to ON.
4. Wait approximately five seconds for the system bulb check.
5. Turn and hold the steering wheel one-half turn to the right (clockwise).
6. Press and hold the ESP OFF button for seven seconds.
7. Turn the steering wheel back to center, and turn and hold an additional one-half turn left (counterclockwise).
8. Press and hold the ESP OFF button for seven seconds.
9. Turn the steering wheel back to center.
10. Press and hold the ESP OFF button for seven seconds.
11. Cycle the ignition key to OFF.

After performing the ESP disable procedure correctly, "ESP OFF" will be displayed in the odometer for approximately 12 seconds each time the ignition is move to ON. Repeating the ESP disable procedure will re-enable normal ESP operation."

Best of luck.
