I would cut the wires off so the block won't flop around and get caught on anything.

What was the condition of the tab on the anti-rotation plate when you removed the cover?

That's the source of your breakage, then. The magnet was allowed to spin.
It usually just breaks off the wires, though.
Has your differential ever been apart in the past?
How about a pic of the plate?

The tab definately didn't keep the magnet from rotating. I've seen this a few times before, but why the magnet rotates with enough torque to displace the tab is a mystery.
