They help to keep the engine bay cooler which in turn helps to extend the life of the componets / plastics and such under the hood.

I did this mod in my 09 JK. Anyone know if this can also be done in the newer 3.6? I looked in the engine compartment and couldn't find the threaded portion on the water pump.

Ive never noticed my JK running warm when crawling or creeping around a trail. So it sounds like this must be a common issue with the JK's? Or is it because the hardrock's come with hood louvers? I guess what Im asking is, is it actually an issue, or a precaution? TIA

It's amazing how much heat comes off of your hood idling in the desert. I vented my hood; cheap insurance.

Thanks to MontanaRaptor for the link to the $20 hood louvers from West Marine!! I added a piece of aluminum over passenger side fuses, just because had it laying around.
